300 Series Austenitic Stainless Steel: 304, 316, and Super Austenitic Grades

300 series stainless steels are austenitic grades used widely in industrial equipment, fittings, valves, tubing, and process systems. They are known for corrosion resistance, formability, weldability, and useful mechanical properties.
The family includes familiar grades such as 304 and 316, plus low-carbon and higher-alloy variants for more specific applications.
Chromium Is the Foundation
Stainless steel needs enough chromium to form a protective oxide layer on the surface. This passive layer helps the metal resist rust and staining better than ordinary carbon steel.
Nickel also plays an important role in many 300 series grades by stabilizing the austenitic structure and supporting formability and toughness.
304 Stainless Steel
304 stainless steel is a versatile general-purpose grade often associated with an 18/8 chromium-nickel composition. It offers good corrosion resistance, good forming behavior, and dependable mechanical properties in many environments.
It is used in equipment, piping, architectural parts, food-related applications, and many industrial components where chloride exposure is limited.
316 Stainless Steel
316 stainless steel adds molybdenum, which improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-bearing environments. That makes 316 a better choice than 304 in many marine, chemical, pharmaceutical, and outdoor applications.
Low-carbon versions such as 304L and 316L can help reduce carbide precipitation during welding, which is important where welded corrosion resistance matters.
Working and Forming
Austenitic stainless steels are usually not hardened by heat treatment. Their strength can increase through cold working, and they are commonly formed, machined, and welded using controlled procedures.
Grade selection should account for forming, welding, cleaning, corrosion exposure, temperature, and the type of connection or component being made.
Super Austenitic Grades
Super austenitic stainless steels contain higher alloy levels, often with more nickel, molybdenum, or nitrogen. They are used when 304 or 316 cannot provide enough resistance to chloride, acid, oxidation, or severe corrosion.
For hydraulic and process buyers, the key is to specify the grade that matches the environment. A part labeled stainless steel is not automatically the right stainless steel for every application.
