304 and 316 Stainless Steel for Hose End Fittings

Stainless hose end fittings are commonly made from austenitic stainless steels such as 304 and 316. Both are corrosion-resistant, but they are not identical.

The right grade depends on the fluid, outside environment, cleaning chemicals, salt exposure, pressure, and expected service life.

304 Stainless Steel

304 stainless steel is widely used because it provides good corrosion resistance and formability for many general industrial environments. It can be suitable for indoor equipment, mild washdown, and applications where chloride exposure is limited.

For hose end fittings, 304 may be a practical choice when the system needs stainless material but does not face strong salt, marine, or aggressive chemical exposure.

316 Stainless Steel

316 stainless steel includes molybdenum, which improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing environments. It is often selected for marine, coastal, chemical, food, beverage, and washdown service.

When a fitting is exposed to salt spray, cleaning agents, or corrosive fluids, 316 can provide better service life than 304.

Selecting the Right Grade

Material grade should be chosen with the entire hose assembly in mind. The hose tube, reinforcement, fitting body, ferrule, O-ring, and adapter all need to be compatible with the fluid and environment.

Also confirm the connection style and pressure rating. A 316 stainless fitting with the wrong thread, seat, or crimp specification will not solve an assembly mismatch.

For many general applications, 304 may be adequate. For salt, chemical, or high-corrosion service, 316 is usually the stronger starting point.
