316, Duplex, and Super Duplex Stainless Steel for Specialty Alloy Service

Specialty stainless alloys are selected when ordinary materials cannot provide enough corrosion resistance, strength, or temperature performance. The range includes common stainless grades as well as duplex and super duplex stainless steels.

For hydraulic and industrial fittings, the alloy choice should follow the fluid, environment, pressure, cleaning exposure, and corrosion risk.

316 and 316L Stainless Steel

Stainless steel grades include 301, 302, 303, 304, 309, 316/316L, 321, and others. Alloy 316/316L is widely used in specialty service because it is an austenitic stainless steel containing nickel and molybdenum.

The added molybdenum and nickel improve corrosion resistance compared with 304 stainless, especially against pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride and salt environments. They also support strength at elevated temperatures.

Where 316/316L Fits

316/316L has good toughness, including at cryogenic temperatures, and performs well in many atmospheric and corrosive environments. It is still not immune to every condition.

Warm chloride environments can create pitting, crevice corrosion, or stress corrosion cracking. That is why the specific chemical exposure and temperature must be checked before assuming 316 is enough.

Common uses include brewery equipment, chemical and petrochemical equipment, chemical transport containers, fittings, food processing equipment, heat exchangers, laboratory equipment, medical components, fasteners, process equipment, ship and boat fittings, springs, and valves.

Duplex Stainless Steel

Duplex stainless steel has a two-phase microstructure made of austenitic and ferritic grains, often near a 50/50 balance. This structure can make duplex stainless steels nearly twice as strong as standard austenitic stainless steels.

Duplex grades also provide strong corrosion resistance and are magnetic, which can help distinguish them from common austenitic grades when identification is uncertain.

Duplex Applications

Duplex stainless steels were developed for demanding chloride-bearing process water and aggressive fluids. They are used in chemical tanker cargo tanks and piping, structural components, flue-gas cleaning equipment, heat exchangers, storage tanks, water heaters, and related industrial service.

The chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content supports localized and uniform corrosion resistance. The microstructure also helps with abrasion resistance, erosion resistance, fatigue resistance, mechanical strength, and weldability.

Super Duplex Stainless Steel

Super duplex 2507 stainless steel, also known as UNS S32750, contains about 25 percent chromium, 4 percent molybdenum, and 7 percent nickel. It was developed for severe service where both strength and corrosion resistance are essential.

Compared with conventional austenitic stainless steels, super duplex stainless steel can provide better pitting resistance and stronger resistance to stress corrosion cracking at moderate temperatures.

Where Super Duplex Is Used

Super duplex stainless steel is used in chemical processing, petrochemical, seawater, desalination, pulp and paper, pollution control, deep-hole oil and gas, heat exchanger, and refinery tube or pipe systems.

The alloy is not a default replacement for all stainless steel. It is chosen when the application justifies the cost and requires its combination of strength, chloride resistance, and chemical resistance.
