British, German, and Japanese Fitting Connection Basics

British, German, and Japanese hydraulic connections can look similar to familiar U.S. fittings, but the thread form, pitch, seat angle, and sealing method may be different. A fitting may start by hand and still be the wrong standard.

This connection group is mainly about identification. The thread alone is not enough. The seat, sealing face, cone angle, O-ring, ferrule, and flange pattern all have to be considered.

British BSP and BSPT connections

British Standard Pipe connections include tapered BSPT and parallel BSPP thread forms. BSPT is often compared with NPT because both are tapered pipe threads, but the thread angle, pitch, and form are not the same.

Tapered BSPT seals through thread interference. Parallel BSPP does not seal by taper. It may seal with a metal-to-metal angled seat, a metal seat with an O-ring, or another sealing arrangement depending on the fitting.

BSPP is sometimes compared with NPSM because both are parallel pipe-style threads, but they should not be treated as interchangeable. The sealing face and thread form still have to match.

British thread sizes may be shown with letters such as G for parallel thread and R for tapered thread. That marking helps identify the thread family, but the fitting still has to be checked for pitch, outside diameter, and sealing style.

German DIN connections

German DIN hydraulic fittings include metric thread connections with specific sealing seats. DIN 7631 uses a 60 degree cone style. The male fitting has a straight metric thread and recessed cone, while the female side uses a straight thread and tapered nose.

DIN 3902 uses a 24 degree cone style. Some versions use a tube, nut, and ferrule assembly. Others use a tapered nose, a flareless swivel, or an O-ring version such as DKO. The metric thread is only one part of the identification. The cone angle and sealing design also matter.

German DIN ports and connectors may look close to other metric fittings, but the seat geometry decides whether the connection seals.

DIN 3852 is another German-controlled connector and port style. It is often referenced when identifying metric hydraulic ports, so it should not be mixed with DIN 7631 or DIN 3902 only because all three may involve metric threads.

Japanese JIS tapered and parallel pipe connections

Japanese JIS hydraulic connections include tapered pipe threads and parallel pipe threads. JIS tapered pipe thread is comparable to BSPT in form and application. JIS parallel pipe thread is comparable to BSPP.

JIS 30 degree flare connections use a 30 degree seat. They may look similar in purpose to SAE 37 degree flare fittings because both use a flared sealing surface, but the angle and dimensions are different.

The parallel JIS pipe connections follow JIS B 0202, while the tapered pipe thread follows JIS B 0203. Those standards help explain why JIS pipe threads may resemble BSP families but still require careful identification.

Japanese JIS four-bolt flanges

JIS four-bolt flange connections include Type I and Type II styles. Type I is comparable to Code 61 standard-pressure flange connections, while Type II is comparable to Code 62 higher-pressure flange connections.

The male side uses a flanged head, O-ring, and split or captive flange halves. The female side is a smooth four-bolt port. JIS 210 Kgf/cm2 square flanges use a square bolt pattern and should not be confused with every SAE-style flange.

Across British, German, and Japanese connection families, the safest method is to identify thread diameter, pitch, seat angle, sealing method, and flange pattern together. Matching only the thread name can lead to the wrong part.

British connections need pitch and seal checks

BSP needs extra care because it is easy to confuse with familiar U.S. pipe connections. BSPT and NPT are both tapered styles, but their pitch and thread form are not the same. BSPP and NPSM are both parallel pipe-style connections, but the sealing faces are different and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Letters such as G and R help identify British parallel and tapered thread families, but the marking is only one clue. A technician still has to measure outside diameter, thread pitch, seat or washer style, and whether the seal is thread distortion, cone contact, O-ring contact, or a captive seal.

DIN and JIS details change the mating half

DIN 7631, DIN 3902, and DIN 3852 all involve metric hydraulic identification, but they do not describe the same sealing geometry. A 60 degree cone, a 24 degree cone, a flareless swivel, a tube-nut-ferrule assembly, and a DKO-style O-ring connection are different mating problems.

JIS connections add another layer because some pipe threads resemble BSP families while JIS 30 degree flare and JIS four-bolt flange connections have their own dimensions. JIS Type I and Type II flanges may be compared to Code 61 and Code 62, but the bolt pattern and pressure class still need to be verified against the actual port.
