BSP Fittings Explained: British Pipe Threads, Seals, and Uses

BSP fittings are pipe-thread fittings based on British Standard Pipe geometry. They use a 55 degree thread form and appear widely on equipment from Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, and many global OEM platforms.
The important point is that BSP is a thread system, not one universal seal method. BSPP and BSPT must be identified separately before a replacement fitting is selected.
What BSP Means
BSP stands for British Standard Pipe. The standard was developed to make pipe connections more consistent across manufacturers and is still common in hydraulic, pneumatic, industrial fluid, water, and gas applications.
A BSP fitting can be an adapter, hose fitting, plug, port connection, or threaded component. The thread angle, pitch, and seal style must all match the mating part.
BSP Thread Geometry
BSP threads use a 55 degree Whitworth thread profile. This is one of the reasons BSP should not be forced together with NPT, which uses a 60 degree thread profile.
Nominal pipe size does not equal the measured outside diameter. A thread gauge and calipers are needed because pipe-thread naming can be misleading during field identification.
BSPP and BSPT
BSPP is the parallel version. Its thread diameter stays constant, and the connection normally seals with a washer, O-ring, bonded seal, or machined face. The threads provide holding force.
BSPT is the tapered version. It seals through tapered thread interference, usually with compatible thread sealant. The taper makes assembly feel tighter as the fitting enters the port.
BSP Compared With NPT and Metric
BSP and NPT are not interchangeable even when the size looks close. BSP uses 55 degree thread geometry, while NPT uses 60 degree geometry and a different pitch system.
Metric threads are another separate family. Some imported equipment combines metric ports, BSP adapters, and hose ends, so the safest replacement process checks the actual thread and sealing surface instead of relying on equipment origin alone.
Where BSP Fittings Are Used
BSP fittings are used in hydraulic systems, pneumatics, oil and gas equipment, industrial machinery, cooling circuits, and general fluid transfer. BSPP is often selected where a washer or O-ring face seal is preferred. BSPT is more common where tapered pipe-thread sealing is specified.
Global machines often use BSP because supply chains and maintenance inventories were built around it. That makes BSP identification a routine task for repair teams that service imported equipment.
Why BSP Fittings Leak
BSP leaks usually come from wrong thread form, missing bonded washers, damaged O-rings, scratched sealing faces, incorrect sealant, overtightening, or mixing BSP with NPT. A fitting that starts by hand is not proof of compatibility.
Before replacing a leaking BSP fitting, inspect the sealing washer or O-ring and confirm whether the thread is parallel or tapered. If the sealing surface is damaged, a new fitting alone may not fix the leak.
Choosing the Right BSP Fitting
Select by BSPP or BSPT first, then by size, material, pressure rating, temperature, fluid, and port style. Carbon steel, stainless steel, and brass are used in different environments, but material choice cannot correct a wrong thread standard.
Use the correct adapter when converting BSP to NPT, JIC, ORB, ORFS, or metric connections. Each side of the adapter must match both the thread geometry and the intended seal method.
