BSPP Class A and Class B Threads: Tolerance, Fit, and Inspection

BSPP threads are parallel British Standard Pipe threads with a 55 degree Whitworth form. They do not seal by thread interference; sealing happens at a washer, O-ring, bonded seal, or face seal surface.

Class A and Class B do not mean different thread types. They are tolerance classes that define how tightly thread dimensions must be controlled.

What Class A and Class B Control

Tolerance class affects major diameter, pitch diameter, minor diameter limits, thread engagement, and acceptable manufacturing variation. Class A is typically tighter than Class B, which can improve alignment but also raises machining cost and gauge rejection risk.

In many specifications, external BSPP threads are controlled more tightly while internal threads allow a broader tolerance. The goal is controlled engagement without excessive interference.

Fit, Engagement, and Seal Alignment

Although BSPP sealing does not occur in the threads, thread fit still matters. Loose engagement can let the fitting tilt, placing uneven load on the bonded seal or O-ring. Too-tight engagement can increase galling risk, especially in stainless steel if lubrication is poor.

The practical concern is not only whether the fitting screws in. The connection must clamp squarely so the seal is compressed evenly under pressure and vibration.

Inspection and Drawing Requirements

OEM drawings may call out the required tolerance class. Inspection can include GO gauges, NO-GO gauges, and pitch diameter measurement. If the thread does not meet the specified class, the part can fail receiving inspection even if it appears to assemble.

For export work and OEM supply, documentation should match the drawing, and gauge records should be available when required.

Choosing the Right BSPP Class

The correct class depends on pressure, assembly environment, regulatory requirements, and supplier capability. High-pressure hydraulic systems and automated assembly may benefit from tighter control, while field assembly may value a balanced fit.

Class A is not automatically the best choice for every situation. The best choice is the one required by the design, inspection plan, and sealing method.
