Do Hydraulic Fittings Use NPT Threads?

Some hydraulic fittings use NPT threads, but not all hydraulic fittings are NPT. NPT is common in the United States and Canada, especially on pipe-thread ports and industrial equipment, but hydraulic systems also use JIC, ORFS, ORB, BSP, metric, flange, hose-end, cap, plug, and adapter connections.

The safe answer is to identify the thread and the sealing method before ordering.

NPT among other hydraulic threads

NPT stands for National Pipe Taper. It is a tapered thread family used for many fluid and gas transfer applications. In hydraulic work, it may appear on pipe-thread adapters, gauges, older equipment, industrial machines, construction equipment, agricultural equipment, and maintenance conversions.

JIC fittings are also common in North America. They use straight threads and a 37 degree flare seating surface. ORFS fittings seal with an O-ring on a flat face. ORB fittings seal with an O-ring at the port. Globally, metric and DIN-style threads are also common.

Because multiple standards can appear on the same machine, a fitting should not be called NPT only because it looks like a pipe thread.

How NPT seals

NPT threads have a 60 degree thread angle with flattened roots and crests. The thread is tapered, so the male and female threads wedge together as they are tightened. In many applications, thread sealant is used because small clearances can create a spiral leak path.

That sealing method is different from JIC, ORB, and ORFS. JIC seals on a flare, ORB seals with an O-ring at the boss port, and ORFS seals with an O-ring on a flat face. These connection families should not be interchanged by appearance.

NPT and BSP are not the same

NPT can look similar to BSP in size, but the thread form is different. NPT uses a 60 degree thread form. BSP uses a 55 degree thread form with rounded crests and roots. A near match may start into the port but fail to seal, bind, or damage the threads.

If the equipment is imported, older, or mixed-standard, confirm whether the pipe thread is NPT, BSPT, or BSPP before ordering.

Pressure, material, and reuse

Historically, NPT developed around pipe applications, but steel and stainless steel NPT fittings are widely used in hydraulic and industrial service when the system is designed for them. Brass may be used in lower-pressure applications, while carbon steel and stainless steel are common for higher pressure or corrosive environments.

NPT fittings should be inspected carefully before reuse. Repeated tightening can deform tapered threads, and overtightening can strip or crack a port. Old sealant should be cleaned out, damaged threads should not be forced, and the fitting should not be reused when the thread no longer engages correctly.

Which style should be used?

The correct style is usually the one the equipment was designed to use. For a repair, match the original port and fitting family unless a proper conversion adapter is intentionally selected. For a new design, the connection choice depends on pressure, leakage tolerance, service access, vibration, and OEM requirements.

NPT fittings can be appropriate in many industrial and mobile hydraulic applications. In other locations, JIC, ORFS, ORB, metric, BSP, or flange connections may be better suited. The thread name alone does not decide the connection. The seal does.
