Hydraulic Flange Plug Caps: What They Do

Flange plug caps are part of the broader flange fitting and flange adapter family. Their job is to close or block flow at a flanged pipe, tube, hose, or port connection.

A flange plug is essentially a flange without a center passage. When it is bolted to a standard mating flange, it closes the end of the line instead of allowing fluid to pass through.

How a Flange Plug Cap Works

The plug cap uses the same bolted flange concept as other flange connections. It aligns to the mating flange pattern and is secured with the required bolts.

Depending on the system design, the closed connection may need to be gas-tight, liquid-tight, or suitable for temporary blocking while service work is performed.

Where Flange Plug Caps Are Used

Flange plug caps are used when a line has to be closed, isolated, or temporarily blocked. They may appear in hydraulic systems, fluid transfer lines, and other pipe or hose assemblies that use flange connections.

In some gray water subsurface irrigation systems, flange plugs can be used to force waste through perforated holes in the pipe under system pressure. The exact use depends on the piping layout and flow path.

Selection Checks

A flange plug cap should match the flange style, bolt pattern, pressure requirement, seal type, and media. It should not be selected only because it seems to cover the opening.

Before installation, inspect the sealing surface, bolts, gasket or O-ring, and mating flange so the blocked connection can hold the required system pressure.
