Identifying BSP and NPT Threaded Fittings

BSP and NPT are two common pipe-thread families used in industrial fluid systems. They may look similar, but they are not interchangeable. The thread form, angle, taper, and sealing method have to match the mating port.
In hydraulic replacement work, the main risk is a near match. A fitting may start into the port and still fail to seal, bind, or damage the thread.
Regional and equipment use
NPT is common in the United States and Canada for many pipe-thread and industrial applications. BSP is common in the United Kingdom and many Commonwealth markets. Hydraulic equipment may also use JIC, ORB, ORFS, metric, DIN, flange, and hose-end connections, so the pipe-thread family should be verified before ordering.
The connection standard may reflect where the machine was designed, where it was serviced, or what adapter was added later. Do not assume every tapered-looking thread on a U.S. machine is NPT.
Thread form
NPT threads use a 60 degree thread angle with flattened peaks and valleys. BSP threads use a 55 degree angle with rounded peaks and valleys. BSP can be BSPT, which is tapered, or BSPP, which is parallel.
Those details matter because sealing depends on the correct thread geometry. A male NPT fitting can sometimes be forced into a BSPT or BSPP port, or the reverse, but the mismatch can create a spiral leak path and damage the connection.
Use a thread pitch gauge and calipers when identifying unknown pipe threads. Measure the diameter, check pitch, inspect taper, and look for the sealing surface.
Sealing method
Both BSP and NPT connections can seal well when correctly matched and installed. Depending on the exact style, the connection may use thread sealant, an O-ring, a bonded seal, or another sealing face.
For NPT, thread sealant is often used because the tapered thread can leave a spiral leak path. For BSPP, the connection is parallel and often relies on a washer, O-ring, bonded seal, or seat rather than thread taper alone.
If the old fitting leaked, inspect the female port before installing a new part. Damaged threads, old sealant, dirt, corrosion, or a scratched sealing face can make a correct replacement leak too.
Installation steps
Before installation, clean the male and female threads and check for burrs, scratches, or crushed thread areas. Apply sealant only when it is appropriate for the thread style, fluid, and equipment requirements.
Start the fitting by hand. If it does not engage cleanly, stop and identify the thread again. After hand tightening, use a wrench according to the size and installation guideline. For shaped fittings such as elbows, tees, and crosses, orientation must be reached without loosening the joint after sealant has been disturbed.
Overtightening can crack a port or deform the thread. Loosening a fitted joint to correct orientation can also break the seal.
Ordering the right adapter
Many replacement parts are conversion adapters. One side may be BSP or NPT while the other side connects to JIC, ORB, ORFS, metric, tube, hose-end, flange, cap, or plug.
That means both ends must be identified. If the pipe-thread side is correct but the opposite side is wrong, the adapter still fails as a replacement. Record thread family, pitch, male or female style, taper or parallel form, sealing method, body shape, material, and installed orientation before ordering.
