Japanese Pipe Threads: JIS, BSPP, and Komatsu Differences

Japanese hydraulic equipment often uses connection styles that look familiar but are not always interchangeable with British or metric fittings. JIS, BSPP-related forms, and Komatsu-style connections need to be identified before replacement.

The main risk is assuming that a 30 degree seat or a similar thread diameter means the parts can mate safely.

Common Japanese Thread Families

Japanese pipe thread connections include Japanese tapered pipe threads and Japanese 30 degree flare parallel threads. Many Japanese heavy equipment manufacturers use fittings with a 30 degree seat and BSPP threads under JIS standards.

These fittings can look similar to British couplings, but standard British couplings may use an inverted seat, making the connection unsuitable.

Japanese 30 Degree Flare Parallel Threads

Japanese 30 degree flare male threads are intended to mate with Japanese 30 degree flare female threads. The seal is made at the 30 degree seat, while the straight threads provide the mechanical connection.

Even when BSPP and Japanese 30 degree flare connections are both discussed under JIS-related standards, the seat form must be confirmed.

Komatsu Connections

Komatsu equipment commonly uses Japanese couplings with a 30 degree seat and metric fine Japanese pipe threads. Komatsu-style 30 degree flare parallel connectors are similar to other Japanese 30 degree flare connectors, but the threads differ.

Komatsu metric fine threads follow JIS B 0207, while Japanese 30 degree BSPP-related threads follow JIS B 0202. That difference makes the two styles incompatible even when the seat angle appears similar.

Flange Styles Around Japanese Equipment

Japanese equipment may also use Komatsu-style flanges, Code 61 or Code 62 flange families, and JIS 4-bolt flange connections. These should be identified separately from pipe thread fittings.

A thread fitting problem and a flange fitting problem may appear on the same machine, but they are not solved with the same measurement.

Replacement Checks

Before replacing Japanese hydraulic fittings, check whether the connection is tapered or parallel, whether it uses a 30 degree seat, whether the thread is BSPP-related or metric fine, and whether the machine uses a Komatsu-specific form.

Do not force a British, SAE, or metric fitting into a Japanese connection unless the thread, seat, and sealing method have all been verified.
