JIC 37 Degree Fitting Assembly and Tightening Steps

JIC 37 degree fittings use parallel threads and a 37 degree flare seat to make a metal-to-metal seal. They are common in hydraulic systems because the flared tube or hose end can be opened, inspected, and reassembled when the sealing surfaces are still in good condition.

The assembly method matters. A JIC connection that is dry, misaligned, under-tightened, or over-tightened can leak even when the thread size looks correct.

JIC 37 Degree Fitting Basics

JIC 37 degree fittings are specified around SAE J514 and ISO 8434-2 style geometry. They are compatible with SAE 37 degree flare connections and are used in higher pressure hydraulic work. SAE 45 degree flare fittings are a different low-pressure family and should not be treated as interchangeable with JIC.

Carbon steel and stainless steel are common materials for JIC hydraulic fittings. The seal is made at the 37 degree flare surface, not by tapered pipe thread interference. That is why both the cone and the flared mating surface need to be clean, aligned, and free of scoring.

Dash Size and Thread Size

JIC sizes are commonly discussed by dash size, with common JIC fitting ranges running from very small sizes such as -02 up to large sizes such as -40. A dash size is based on sixteenths of an inch. For example, -04 corresponds to 4/16 inch, or 1/4 inch, while -32 corresponds to 32/16 inch, or 2 inches.

Dash size is only part of the check. The thread size, tube or hose size, seat angle, and sealing condition all need to match before the fitting is tightened.

Assembly Steps

  1. Lubricate the threads and cone lightly with hydraulic fluid or a compatible light oil.
  2. Align the mating components so the flare faces meet squarely.
  3. Turn the flare nut by hand until the sealing surfaces contact.
  4. Apply the correct torque for the dash size and thread size.
  5. If a wrench pad is available beside the nut, hold it with a second wrench so the tube or adapter does not rotate while the nut is tightened.

Why Wet Torquing Helps

Wet torquing means lubricating the threads and sealing area before tightening. Lubrication makes friction more consistent, which helps the applied torque create clamping force at the sealing surface instead of being lost in thread drag.

Dry or inconsistent friction can lead to a misleading torque reading. Over-tightening may deform threads or damage the flare seat. Under-tightening may leave the metal-to-metal seal without enough contact pressure. In both cases, the connection can leak after vibration, pressure cycles, or longer service time.

These values are a benchmark for leak-free assembly in many cases. Final torque should still follow the fitting manufacturer, material, plating, and application requirements.

When a Torque Wrench Is Not Practical

If a torque wrench cannot be used, align and hand-tighten the connection first. Then tighten gently with a wrench until there is firm resistance. Mark the nut and adapter, hold the wrench pad if available, and rotate the nut about 1/8 to 1/4 turn. A common field method is to hold the wrench pad steady with one wrench while using the second wrench to make the controlled final turn. Do not exceed the needed turn, and remember that larger fittings usually require less rotation than smaller fittings.

Before replacement, record the dash size, thread size, seat condition, material, and whether the fitting is JIC 37 degree rather than SAE 45 degree or another flare style.
