JIC and NPT Fittings: Threads, Flare Seats, and Use Cases

JIC and NPT fittings are both common in hydraulic and industrial fluid systems, but they do not seal the same way. A fitting can have a similar size and still be the wrong connection if the thread family and sealing surface do not match.
The practical difference starts with the standard behind the fitting, then shows up in the thread shape, the sealing method, and the type of joint the system needs.
Standards and Connection Style
JIC fittings are associated with the SAE 37 degree flare connection. The seal is made at the angled metal seat, not by wedging tapered pipe threads together. This makes JIC a familiar choice for hydraulic hose assemblies, tube connections, and serviceable fluid power lines.
NPT fittings are pipe-thread fittings based on a tapered thread form. The taper tightens as the male and female threads engage. Sealant is usually needed because the spiral path through the thread can otherwise leak.
Threads and Sealing Surfaces
A JIC fitting has straight threads that pull the flare seat together. The thread does the clamping work, while the 37 degree cone creates the seal. If the flare is damaged, mismatched, or over-tightened, the joint can leak even if the threads look fine.
An NPT fitting uses tapered threads to create interference as it tightens. Too little engagement can leak, while too much torque can split or distort the port. The thread form, taper, and sealant all matter.
Which One Fits the Job
JIC is often preferred where the connection may need to be disconnected and reassembled, and where a metal flare seal is appropriate. NPT is common on pipe ports and general pipe-thread connections, especially where tapered pipe threads are already built into the equipment.
Do not choose between JIC and NPT by appearance alone. Confirm thread type, seat angle, taper, sealant requirement, pressure rating, and port design before replacing the fitting.
