JIC vs AN Fittings: 37 Degree Flare Standards and Use Cases

JIC and AN fittings are often discussed together because both use a 37 degree flare connection. They can look close enough to confuse a replacement job, but they are built around different standards and tolerance expectations.
The practical difference is not simply the wrench size. A replacement should confirm the flare seat, thread details, material, pressure requirement, and whether the system needs a general hydraulic fitting or an aerospace-style connection with tighter controls.
What JIC and AN Fittings Have in Common
Both fitting families seal at an angled metal flare rather than by wedging pipe threads together. The threads pull the male cone and female flare seat into contact, while the 37 degree surface creates the fluid seal.
This makes the condition of the flare face important. Scratches, deformation, dirt, or over-tightening can create leaks even if the thread size appears correct.
Standards and Tolerance Differences
JIC fittings are associated with SAE 37 degree flare hydraulic connections and are widely used on mobile equipment, hydraulic hose assemblies, tube connections, and serviceable industrial fluid lines.
AN fittings follow aerospace-style standards and tighter thread and manufacturing expectations. In many sizes, the nominal dimensions appear similar to JIC, but the tolerance class and application assumptions are not identical.
Thread Size and Dash Size
JIC and AN sizes are commonly described with dash numbers. The dash number relates to tube outside diameter in sixteenths of an inch, but it should still be checked against actual thread diameter and pitch.
A similar dash number does not prove the two fittings are acceptable substitutes. Confirm thread size, thread pitch, flare angle, and seat condition before any interchange is considered.
Pressure, Vibration, and Leak Risk
Pressure capability depends on fitting design, material, tube or hose construction, assembly quality, and the equipment standard. JIC is a common hydraulic choice because it is available, serviceable, and familiar in many fluid power systems.
AN connections are often chosen where vibration, fatigue, weight control, or specification control are central to the design. The tighter tolerance expectation can matter when the system cannot accept small variations in contact area or thread fit.
Can JIC and AN Be Interchanged?
Some JIC and AN parts may physically assemble in certain sizes, but that should not be treated as a blanket rule. A connection that tightens by hand can still have the wrong thread class, surface finish, or flare contact.
Interchange may be acceptable only in low-risk situations where the machine owner, drawing, pressure rating, and fitting manufacturer allow it. For critical service, use the fitting family specified by the system.
Where JIC Makes Sense
JIC is usually the practical choice for general hydraulic hose ends, tube adapters, service parts, field maintenance, and equipment built around SAE 37 degree flare connections.
Its main advantages are availability, broad size range, and compatibility with many hydraulic components that already use JIC ports or adapters.
Where AN Makes Sense
AN fittings are better suited where the equipment design calls for aerospace-style control over dimensions, fatigue behavior, or specification traceability. They should be selected because the system requires that standard, not because they look like a premium version of JIC.
When a drawing calls for AN, replacing it with JIC should be approved by the responsible engineer or equipment owner.
Installation Checks
Inspect the flare surfaces, clean the joint, align the parts, and tighten to the correct torque range. Do not use thread sealant on a flare seat. Sealant belongs to tapered pipe-thread connections, not to the 37 degree flare surface.
If a joint leaks after assembly, do not keep adding torque. Recheck the standard, dash size, flare angle, seat condition, and whether the two parts are actually intended to work together.
