JIC vs NPT Fittings: Flare Seals, Pipe Threads, and Adapters

JIC and NPT fittings are often confused because both appear in hydraulic and industrial systems. They are not the same connection. JIC seals at a 37 degree flare. NPT seals through tapered pipe-thread interference and sealant.

The two should not be directly mixed. A proper adapter is needed when a system must transition from a JIC flare connection to an NPT pipe-thread port.

Why Thread Type Matters

Hydraulic leaks often start when a fitting feels tight but seals in the wrong place. Thread engagement does not prove the connection is correct.

JIC and NPT use different geometry, different seal surfaces, and different assembly practices. Choosing between them is really a choice between flare sealing and pipe-thread sealing.

What JIC Fittings Are

JIC fittings are SAE 37 degree flare fittings. A male cone and female flare seat create a metal-to-metal seal. The straight threads only pull the sealing surfaces together.

JIC is common on hydraulic hose assemblies, mobile equipment, and serviceable fluid power connections. It is widely stocked and can be inspected by checking the flare surface.

What NPT Fittings Are

NPT means National Pipe Taper. The thread tapers along its length, so the male and female threads wedge together during assembly. Sealant is normally used to fill the spiral leak path.

NPT is common on pipe ports, gauges, valves, and many North American industrial systems. It can be useful, but repeated assembly and overtightening can damage the thread or port.

Technical Differences

JIC uses a flare seat and straight threads. NPT uses tapered threads and thread sealant. JIC does not need thread sealant at the flare. NPT usually does.

JIC is often preferred for hydraulic hose ends and serviceable flare connections. NPT is more common where the equipment port is already a tapered pipe thread.

Interchangeability and Adapter Use

JIC and NPT are not interchangeable. A JIC male flare cannot seal in an NPT female pipe port, and an NPT male thread cannot seal against a JIC flare seat.

Adapters are acceptable when each side is designed for its own seal method. One side can be JIC, and the other side can be NPT. The adapter must match pressure, material, orientation, and thread size.

Choosing the Right Connection

Start with the machine port and mating component. If the port is NPT, use NPT or an NPT-side adapter with correct sealant. If the hose or tube end is JIC, use the correct 37 degree flare connection.

Pressure, vibration, fluid compatibility, corrosion exposure, and service frequency also matter. In some leak-critical applications, ORFS may be a better option than either JIC or NPT.

Installation Practices

For JIC, inspect the flare, align the fitting, tighten to the proper torque, and avoid crushing the seat. For NPT, apply compatible sealant correctly and avoid over-tightening.

Stainless steel pipe-thread assemblies need extra care because galling can occur. Lubrication, sealant compatibility, and torque control reduce the risk.

Common Mistakes

Common mistakes include reading only the nominal size, mixing standards because they almost fit, using sealant on a flare seat, over-tightening tapered threads, and assuming a supplier can identify the part from a single photo.

A reliable replacement record should include thread family, thread size, pitch, seal surface, material, pressure rating, and the component being connected.
