JIS vs JIC Hydraulic Fittings: Flare Angle, Threads, and Compatibility

JIS and JIC hydraulic fittings can look similar because both are flare-style hydraulic connections, but they are not automatically interchangeable. Thread form, flare details, and standards must all match before a connection is considered safe.

A fitting made from the right material can still fail if the geometry is wrong. Certification and material grade do not correct a mismatched flare or thread.

Why Fitting Standards Matter

Hydraulic fittings seal by geometry. A small difference in flare angle, thread pitch, or seat design can create a leak that appears only after the system is pressurized.

Global sourcing adds risk because similar-looking parts may be described with different regional standards. A replacement should be identified by measurements, not only by appearance.

What Hydraulic Flare Fittings Do

A flare fitting seals when a male cone and female seat meet at the correct angle. The threads pull the parts together, but the thread is not the fluid seal.

Pressure performance depends on correct material, correct machining, correct flare contact, and proper assembly torque. If the flare angle is wrong, tightening can damage the seat without creating a reliable seal.

JIS Fitting Basics

JIS refers to Japanese Industrial Standards. JIS hydraulic fittings are common on Japanese equipment and certain imported machines.

JIS connections may use metric or BSP-related thread forms depending on the fitting type. That is why a JIS part must be checked against the actual equipment standard and not identified only by country of origin.

JIC Fitting Basics

JIC fittings are SAE 37 degree flare fittings widely used in North American hydraulic systems. They are common in mobile equipment, agricultural machinery, construction machines, and industrial hydraulic lines.

The JIC seal is made at the 37 degree metal flare. Thread size and pitch must match, but the flare seat is the final sealing surface.

Side-by-Side Differences

The main comparison points are flare angle, thread standard, pressure expectation, equipment origin, and available adapters. JIC has a strong installed base in North American-style hydraulic systems. JIS appears frequently on Japanese and some Asian equipment.

The visual trap is assuming two flare fittings are compatible because the wrench size and general shape look close. The thread and seat can still be different.

Why They Should Not Be Forced Together

A thread mismatch can damage the male or female side. A flare mismatch can create a narrow contact band instead of a full seal. The result may be a small leak, seat cracking, or a damaged port.

Forcing the joint can also make future identification harder because the original geometry may be distorted.

How to Identify JIS and JIC

Measure the flare angle, thread diameter, and thread pitch. Look for markings, equipment manuals, or known sample fittings. Check whether the machine is built around Japanese, North American, or mixed standards.

Do not rely on one clue. A complete identification uses the seat angle, thread form, mating part, pressure requirement, and equipment standard together.

Adapters and Selection

Adapters can be used when a system must connect JIS and JIC families, but the adapter must have the correct geometry on both sides. One side should match the JIS component, and the other should match the JIC component.

Choose based on equipment standard first, then pressure, vibration, fluid, material, and serviceability. If the application is high pressure or high vibration, a wrong flare match is not a small risk. It is a system reliability issue.
