NPSM Fittings Explained: Straight Pipe Threads, Cone Seats, and Compatibility

NPSM fittings use National Pipe Straight Mechanical threads. The word straight is important: NPSM threads do not taper like NPT threads, so they do not create a pipe-thread interference seal by themselves.
In many hydraulic and fluid connections, NPSM is used as a mechanical thread with a separate sealing seat. The thread pulls the connection together, while the seal happens at the seat or with the mating component designed for that style.
What NPSM Means
NPSM is a straight pipe thread form. The diameter remains parallel along the thread length. That makes it different from NPT and NPTF, which are tapered thread systems.
Because the thread is straight, a correct NPSM connection has to be evaluated by both thread engagement and sealing surface. The fitting is not meant to seal simply by tightening the threads harder.
How an NPSM Fitting Seals
NPSM fittings often seal with a 30 degree cone seat or a matched mechanical seat. The threads provide the force that brings the seat into contact. If the mating part does not have the right seat, the connection may thread together but still leak.
This is why NPSM can be confused during repair. A mechanic may see that the thread starts smoothly and assume the connection is correct. The seal location has to match as well.
Identifying NPSM
Look for a straight thread profile rather than a taper. Measure the thread diameter at more than one point; a straight thread will not reduce in diameter the way an NPT thread does.
Then check the seat. If the fitting depends on a cone seat, the mating part must present the matching surface. Thread pitch and nominal pipe size are not enough to identify the connection safely.
NPSM Compared With NPT, NPTF, and NPS
NPT is tapered and normally uses sealant to help seal the thread path. NPTF is also tapered but is designed as a dryseal thread with tighter control of thread contact. NPSM is straight and mechanical, so it needs the correct sealing seat.
NPS is a broader straight pipe-thread term. NPSM is a specific mechanical straight-thread use. A straight thread from one system should not be assumed to seal with another straight-thread part unless the seat and application match.
What NPSM Can Mate With
NPSM female swivel connections are often used with male NPTF or matching cone-seat designs in specific hydraulic adapter families. The safe connection depends on the engineered mating pair, not just on thread diameter.
If the part drawing or old fitting is unclear, compare thread size, pitch, taper, seat angle, swivel design, and sealing surface. A proper adapter is safer than forcing a straight-thread part onto a tapered-thread port.
Sealant and Leak Prevention
Thread sealant should not be used to pretend a straight mechanical thread is a tapered pipe-thread seal. If sealant is specified for a related adapter, follow the fitting manufacturer's instructions, but do not rely on tape to replace a missing seat seal.
Leaks usually come from using the wrong mating thread, missing the cone seat, damaged seating surfaces, worn swivel parts, contamination, or overtightening. Confirm the thread family and the sealing method before choosing an NPSM replacement.
Where NPSM Appears
NPSM is often seen in hydraulic adapters, swivel connections, and assemblies that need a straight mechanical thread rather than a tapered pipe-thread joint. It can be useful when the connection must turn during assembly or when a cone seat provides the actual sealing surface.
It is limited by the mating design. If the old part is unavailable, match the connection by thread, seat, pressure rating, and fluid service. Do not select a replacement from nominal pipe size alone.
