NPT, BSPT, and BSPP Threads: Sealing Differences and Compatibility

NPT, BSPT, and BSPP are pipe-thread standards that can look similar during repair, but they do not seal the same way. The differences include thread angle, taper, pitch, standard body, region, and sealing location.
Misidentifying one of these threads can lead to leaks, damaged ports, false torque readings, and repeat maintenance problems.
What NPT Is
NPT is a North American tapered pipe thread. It uses a 60 degree thread form and a 1:16 taper. The seal is created by thread interference and normally assisted with PTFE tape or compatible pipe compound.
NPT is common on U.S. hydraulic equipment, pipe ports, gauges, valves, and industrial fluid systems. Its nominal size is not the same as the measured outside thread diameter.
What BSPT Is
BSPT is British Standard Pipe Taper. Like NPT, it is tapered and can use thread interference with sealant. The key difference is that BSPT uses a 55 degree thread angle and a different pitch system.
Because both NPT and BSPT are tapered, they are sometimes forced together by mistake. Partial engagement does not mean the geometry is correct or that the seal will hold under pressure and vibration.
What BSPP Is
BSPP is British Standard Pipe Parallel. The thread is straight, not tapered. BSPP normally seals with a bonded washer, O-ring, or flat-face sealing surface rather than by thread interference.
This makes BSPP very different from both NPT and BSPT. PTFE tape on BSPP threads will not create the intended seal if the fitting requires a washer or O-ring at the face.
Compatibility Problems
NPT should not be treated as interchangeable with BSPT or BSPP. NPT and BSPT have different thread angles and pitch. NPT and BSPP differ in both taper and sealing method.
Forcing mixed threads together can leave only a few thread peaks carrying the load. It can also damage stainless threads, distort female ports, and create a leak that appears later during pressure cycling.
Using Adapters Correctly
Adapters are the proper way to convert between NPT, BSPT, BSPP, and other connection families. A safe adapter matches the thread standard on each side and provides the correct sealing method for each connection.
Do not stack adapters unnecessarily. Each extra connection adds another sealing point and another place for alignment, torque, or material mismatch to cause trouble.
How to Avoid Thread Mistakes
Check the equipment region, fitting marking, thread pitch, taper, and seal surface. Confirm whether the thread is 60 degree or 55 degree, whether it is tapered or parallel, and whether the seal belongs in the thread or at the face.
When the system combines imported equipment with local replacement parts, identify the thread standard before ordering. Matching the connection standard is usually cheaper than repairing a damaged port after a forced fit.
Quick Field Reminders
Do not assume a nominal size means the same thread worldwide. A 1/4 inch pipe thread can follow different standards depending on the equipment origin and thread family.
Do not rely on sealant to correct a thread-angle mismatch. Use the correct adapter when converting between NPT, BSPT, and BSPP, and verify the sealing washer or O-ring when the BSPP side is involved.
