NPT Fittings: Tapered Pipe Threads and Sealing Basics

NPT fittings use National Pipe Tapered threads, a U.S. pipe-thread standard defined for tapered pipe and fitting connections. The taper is the main feature: the thread diameter changes along the length of the fitting.

Unlike a straight thread that needs a separate sealing surface, NPT threads tighten by wedging the male and female tapered threads together. Sealant such as PTFE tape or compatible pipe compound is normally used because the thread path can otherwise create a spiral leak path.

NPT Thread Characteristics

NPT threads use a 60 degree thread form with flattened crests and roots. The taper angle is commonly described as about 1 degree 47 minutes from the centerline, with a taper rate of 3/4 inch per foot, or 1/16 inch per inch.

Pitch is measured in threads per inch. The outside diameter of a male NPT fitting is not the same as the nominal pipe size, which is why direct measurement and a thread chart are important during identification.

NPT Sizing Can Be Confusing

NPT includes both external and internal threads. Male and female fittings follow the same taper concept, but the actual measured diameter can surprise buyers who expect the marked size to equal the outside diameter.

For example, a fitting described as 1/8 inch NPT has an actual outside thread diameter closer to 3/8 inch. Some sizes also share similar thread counts, so thread pitch alone is not enough. Size, taper, OD, pitch, and seal style should be checked together.

Advantages of NPT Fittings

NPT fittings are widely available and come in many sizes, materials, and adapter combinations. That availability makes them common on pipe ports, gauges, manifolds, and general fluid service connections.

They are also simple to assemble when the port, fitting, sealant, and torque are correct. In appropriate pressure ranges, the tapered thread engagement can create a practical metal-to-metal threaded connection.

Limitations and Failure Risks

NPT sealing depends partly on thread deformation and controlled tightening. That makes it a poor choice for connections that must be assembled and disassembled frequently.

Wrong size, poor alignment, missing sealant, cross-threading, and overtightening can expand ports or crack threads. More torque is not always a better seal. If the connection must hold high pressure, vibration, or repeated service, confirm whether NPT is the correct port standard or whether an O-ring or flare-style connection is better for the system.
