O-Rings and O-Ring Fittings: Assembly, Selection, Storage, and Use

O-rings are small parts, but in hydraulic fittings they often decide whether the connection stays dry. ORFS, ORB, and other O-ring fittings rely on the correct groove, surface finish, material, and assembly method.
The main points are assembly control, fitting selection, seal storage, material compatibility, and understanding where the O-ring actually seals.
ORFS Assembly Basics
O-Ring Face Seal fittings seal at a flat face. The O-ring sits on the male face and compresses against the female flat surface as the nut is tightened.
Before assembly, inspect the O-ring, groove, and flat face. Replace cut, flattened, hardened, swollen, or missing O-rings. Light compatible lubrication can help prevent twisting during assembly when the fitting instructions allow it.
Selecting an ORFS Fitting
Select ORFS fittings by application, pressure, temperature, fluid, vibration, and available space. The face seal can work well in leak-sensitive hydraulic systems, but the hose, tube, adapter, and port still need to match.
The fitting material and O-ring compound should be chosen together. A stainless fitting with the wrong O-ring material can still fail.
Creating a Leak-Free Face Seal
A leak-free ORFS connection depends on clean faces, the correct O-ring, proper alignment, and controlled tightening. Dirt or a scratch on the flat sealing face can create a leak path.
Do not treat the threads as the seal. The threads only clamp the face together. The O-ring does the sealing work.
How O-Ring Fittings Are Used
ORFS fittings are used for hose and tube connections where a face seal is wanted. ORB fittings are used at boss ports on manifolds, valves, pumps, cylinders, and adapters.
Both use O-rings, but they seal in different places. ORFS seals between faces. ORB seals at the port shoulder or chamfer.
O-Ring Storage
O-rings should be stored clean, dry, and away from heat, sunlight, ozone, solvents, and sharp edges. Poor storage can harden or crack the elastomer before it ever reaches the fitting.
Keep sizes and materials identified. Mixing similar-looking O-rings can lead to the wrong compound or cross section being installed.
O-Ring Boss Fittings
O-ring boss fittings use straight threads and an O-ring to seal into a machined port. They are common where a component port needs a reliable and serviceable seal.
Inspect the port spotface, chamfer, O-ring, backup washer if present, and adjustable nut on adjustable adapters. Port damage can cause leaks even when the fitting is new.
ORFS vs ORB
ORFS is a face-seal connection. ORB is a port connection. The names sound similar because both include O-rings, but the fitting geometry and assembly goal are different.
Use ORFS where the hose or tube joint calls for a face seal. Use ORB where the machine port is an O-ring boss port.
Choosing O-Ring Material
NBR is common for many petroleum-based hydraulic fluids. FKM may be selected for higher temperature or chemical resistance. EPDM can be used in some water or phosphate-ester applications but is not a general replacement for petroleum oil service.
Always match the compound to the fluid, temperature, and equipment specification. Color alone is not a reliable material identification method.
Common Applications
O-ring face seals are common in mobile equipment, construction machinery, oil and gas equipment, instrumentation lines, and systems where vibration and leakage control matter.
The best fitting choice depends on whether the connection is a hose end, tube joint, port adapter, or component port. Identify the sealing location before ordering replacement parts.
