ORB Fittings Explained: O-Ring Boss Identification, Sizes, and Uses

An ORB fitting is an O-ring boss fitting. It uses straight threads for mechanical engagement and an O-ring for sealing at the port. This makes it different from pipe-thread fittings that try to seal through the thread itself.

ORB connections are common in hydraulic systems because the sealing point is controlled and serviceable when the fitting, port, O-ring, and torque are correct.

What ORB Means

ORB stands for O-Ring Boss. The male fitting has a straight-thread body with an O-ring groove. The female boss port has straight internal threads and a sealing surface near the port opening.

As the fitting tightens, the O-ring compresses against the boss port. The thread provides the clamping force, while the O-ring prevents fluid from escaping.

How an ORB Fitting Works

The male fitting design combines a straight thread, a shoulder or backup area, and the O-ring. The female port supplies the matching straight thread and a chamfered or machined sealing surface.

This design separates holding from sealing. That is why ORB can be more repeatable than tapered pipe threads in many hydraulic port connections. It also means the O-ring must be the right size and material.

Where ORB Is Used

ORB fittings appear on hydraulic manifolds, valves, cylinders, mobile equipment, test equipment, and industrial fluid transfer systems. They are also used in performance and equipment applications where a port connection needs a compact O-ring seal.

The connection is most useful where the port is designed for straight-thread O-ring boss sealing. It should not be treated as a replacement for NPT, JIC, ORFS, or BSP without a correctly designed adapter.

How to Identify ORB

A male ORB fitting usually has straight threads and an O-ring near the end of the fitting. A female ORB port has straight threads and a sealing area for the O-ring at the port face.

ORB can be confused with JIC because JIC also uses straight threads in many cases. The difference is the seat. JIC seals on a 37 degree flare. ORB seals with the O-ring at the port. NPT can also be mistaken for ORB, but NPT is tapered and normally uses thread sealant.

Sizing and Measurement

ORB sizes are commonly described by dash size and thread size. Correct measurement includes thread outside diameter, thread pitch, and confirmation that the fitting has the O-ring groove and boss-port geometry.

Use calipers and a thread pitch gauge when matching a replacement. Also check the O-ring groove, port depth, and shoulder clearance. A fitting may thread in but still fail if the O-ring bottoms incorrectly or the port is not an ORB port.

Advantages and Limits

ORB fittings offer leak resistance, serviceability, and orientation flexibility in many adjustable adapter styles. They can be reused when the fitting and port are undamaged and the O-ring is replaced or inspected.

Failures often come from cut O-rings, wrong O-ring material, dirt on the sealing surface, damaged ports, bottoming out, or overtightening. Choose ORB by thread size, pressure, material, fluid, temperature, and port design rather than by appearance alone.

Installation Checks

Before tightening, inspect the port face and make sure the O-ring is seated in the groove. Light lubrication can help the O-ring seat without twisting or cutting, but the lubricant must be compatible with the fluid and elastomer.

Adjustable ORB fittings should be positioned without forcing the O-ring to carry side load. If an adapter is used to connect ORB to JIC, ORFS, NPT, BSP, or metric fittings, each side must be identified by its own thread and seal standard.
