ORB Fittings: O-Ring Boss Threads and Seal Design

ORB fittings are O-ring boss connections commonly associated with SAE J1926. They use straight threads and an O-ring seal, which makes them different from tapered pipe-thread fittings such as NPT.

The thread holds the fitting in place, while the O-ring creates the primary seal against the boss port. That separation of holding force and sealing surface is why ORB fittings are common in hydraulic and mobile equipment systems.

How an ORB Fitting Seals

The male ORB fitting has Unified Thread Standard threads and a groove for the O-ring. The female port has a seat or chamfer at the start of the thread area. When assembled, the O-ring compresses between the fitting and the port.

This compression helps create a tight seal even when small dimensional variation exists between parts. ORB adapters may also convert from an ORB end to NPT, NPSM, AN, JIC, BSP, metric, or other connection families on the opposite side.

Thread Description

ORB threads are usually described with a major diameter reference and a thread pitch. The thread form uses a 60 degree angle, and pitch is commonly given in threads per inch.

Because some thread sizes can look similar, the O-ring groove, port geometry, thread size, and fitting length should be checked together. A fitting that starts by hand is not automatically the correct ORB size.

Advantages of ORB Fittings

ORB fittings are widely available in unions, elbows, tees, swivels, bends, and adapter combinations. Carbon steel and stainless steel versions are common, depending on pressure, corrosion exposure, and application requirements.

The O-ring seal can support high-pressure hydraulic service and allows the connection to be reassembled more safely than many tapered thread joints. If the fitting and port are in good condition, the O-ring can often be replaced during service.

Limitations to Check

The O-ring is also the most sensitive part of the connection. It must be compatible with the fluid, temperature, pressure, and environment. Heat, chemical attack, cuts, or flattening can turn the connection into a leak point.

Wrong sizing or an overlong fitting can compress the O-ring incorrectly. Before installation, confirm the ORB size, thread, port depth, seal material, and O-ring condition instead of relying on appearance alone.
