ORB vs JIC Fittings: O-Ring Boss Ports vs 37 Degree Flare Seats

ORB and JIC fittings both use straight threads in many hydraulic applications, but they seal in different places. ORB seals with an O-ring at the boss port. JIC seals with a 37 degree metal flare seat.
Because the threads can look similar to a quick glance, the seal location has to be checked before ordering or assembling a replacement.
What ORB Fittings Are
ORB stands for O-Ring Boss. A male ORB fitting has straight UNF-style threads and an O-ring near the end. The O-ring seals against the machined boss port.
The thread positions and holds the fitting. It is not the pressure seal. The O-ring material, groove, port chamfer, and spotface condition determine whether the connection seals correctly.
What JIC Fittings Are
JIC fittings are 37 degree flare fittings. The male cone and female flare seat create a metal-to-metal seal when the nut is tightened.
The threads generate clamping force, but the seal occurs at the flare. A damaged or mismatched seat can leak even when the thread size is correct.
Sealing Method Comparison
ORB uses an elastomer seal at the port. JIC uses a metal flare seal between mating fitting faces. That makes ORB useful for port connections and adjustable adapters, while JIC is common on hose and tube assembly ends.
ORB can tolerate some service cycles when the O-ring is replaced and the port is clean. JIC depends on the flare surfaces staying smooth and properly aligned.
Performance and Installation
ORB is often selected where a compact port seal, orientation control, and serviceable O-ring are helpful. It performs well when the port machining and O-ring material are correct.
JIC is widely available and practical for many general hydraulic connections. It is less dependent on elastomer compatibility at the flare, but it can be more sensitive to surface damage from overtightening or vibration.
Interchangeability Risk
ORB and JIC are not interchangeable by thread alone. An ORB male end needs an O-ring boss port. A JIC male end needs a female 37 degree flare seat.
If one is forced into the other, the connection may tighten but the seal will be wrong. A proper ORB-to-JIC adapter is needed when a system must transition between the two families.
How to Identify Them
Look for an O-ring groove near the end of an ORB male fitting. Look for a 37 degree cone on a JIC male fitting. On the female side, ORB is a boss port, while JIC has a flare seat.
Use calipers, a pitch gauge, and a seat-angle check when the part is not obvious. Record the port style, thread size, and seal style together.
Choosing ORB or JIC
Choose ORB when the connection is a boss port and the design calls for an O-ring seal. Choose JIC when the mating side is a 37 degree flare connection and broad service availability is important.
For leak troubleshooting, inspect the O-ring on ORB connections and the flare surface on JIC connections first. Replacing the fitting without checking the actual seal surface often leaves the original problem in place.
