ORFS Hydraulic Fittings: How O-Ring Face Seals Reduce Leakage

O-ring face seal hydraulic fittings are used where a connection needs strong leakage control under pressure. The seal is made by compressing an O-ring between flat faces rather than relying on a tapered thread path or a metal flare alone.

How the ORFS Seal Is Built

An ORFS fitting carries an O-ring in a groove on the fitting face. The mating side presents a flat face, often through a sleeve or tube end prepared for the connection. When the nut is tightened, the O-ring compresses evenly against that flat face and creates the leak barrier.

The threads provide clamping force. They are not the primary sealing surface. This is why cleanliness, O-ring condition, and face damage matter so much.

Pressure and Standards

ORFS connections are commonly made to SAE J1453. Many ORFS hydraulic fittings are used in high-pressure systems, and some applications reference operating pressures up to 6,000 PSI when the size, material, assembly, and rating are appropriate.

Tube Support and Field Service

The flat face sleeve helps support the tube during assembly and helps prevent tube twisting while the connection is tightened. ORFS connections can also be disassembled and reassembled in the field when the sealing faces remain sound and the O-ring is replaced as needed.

Where ORFS Makes Sense

ORFS is a strong choice where elastomeric sealing is acceptable and leakage must be minimized. It is often used on mobile equipment, high-pressure hydraulic lines, and systems where vibration or variation in assembly procedures can make metal-to-metal seals less reliable.
