ORFS vs ORB Fittings: Face Seal vs Boss Port Selection

ORFS and ORB fittings both use O-rings, but the O-ring is not in the same place. ORFS seals at the flat face between fitting halves. ORB seals at the boss port.

That difference controls where each connection should be used. ORFS is mainly a face-seal connection for hose, tube, or adapter ends. ORB is a port connection for a straight-thread boss.

What ORFS Fittings Do

ORFS stands for O-Ring Face Seal. The male side has an O-ring on a flat face, and the female side provides a matching flat sealing surface. Tightening the joint compresses the O-ring axially.

The straight threads provide clamping force. They do not seal the fluid. ORFS is often chosen for high-pressure hydraulic systems where leakage control and vibration resistance are important.

What ORB Fittings Do

ORB stands for O-Ring Boss. The fitting has straight threads and an O-ring that seals into a machined boss port. The seal is made at the port, not between two hose-end faces.

ORB is common on manifolds, valves, pumps, cylinders, and adjustable port adapters. It provides a serviceable O-ring seal when the port geometry and spotface are correct.

Sealing Direction and Location

ORFS is an axial face seal. The O-ring is compressed between opposing flat faces. ORB is a boss-port seal. The O-ring seals at the port shoulder or chamfer as the fitting is tightened into the boss.

Because the O-rings work in different locations, ORFS and ORB should not be selected only because both names contain O-ring.

Leakage Resistance and Vibration

ORFS usually has an advantage in leak-sensitive hose and tube connections, especially where vibration and pressure cycling are present. The face seal stays stable when the parts are aligned and the O-ring is sound.

ORB performs well at ports and is often compact and efficient. It is not a substitute for ORFS where the connection needs a face-seal hose or tube joint.

Installation Differences

For ORFS, inspect the flat face and O-ring groove. Dirt, scratches, wrong O-ring material, or uneven tightening can create leaks.

For ORB, inspect the boss port, spotface, chamfer, O-ring, and adjustable nut or backup washer if used. Port wear and overtightening can damage the sealing area.

When to Choose ORFS

Choose ORFS for high-pressure lines, vibration-prone systems, and leak-critical hose or tube connections where an O-ring face seal is specified.

ORFS is especially useful when repeated pressure cycles or equipment cleanliness make small leaks unacceptable.

When to Choose ORB

Choose ORB when the machine port is an O-ring boss port and the fitting must connect directly into a valve, manifold, cylinder, pump, or other component.

ORB is also useful for adjustable adapters where orientation matters. The key is to keep the ORB seal at the boss port and use another fitting family only on the opposite end if the system requires it.
