ORFS vs ORB Fittings: How the O-Ring Seal Is Different

ORFS and ORB fittings both use an O-ring to seal hydraulic connections, but the O-ring is located in a different place and the connection serves a different purpose.
That difference affects where each fitting is used, how it seals, and what should be checked during replacement.
How ORFS Fittings Seal
ORFS stands for O-ring face seal. An ORFS male fitting has straight threads and an O-ring in a groove on the flat face. The female side has straight threads and a machined flat face. As the connection is tightened, the female face compresses the O-ring on the male face.
ORFS fittings are common on hydraulic lines used in off-road construction, agriculture, oil and gas, mining, and other high-performance equipment where vibration and frequent actuation can create leak risk.
ORFS Pressure, Materials, and Limits
ORFS fittings are associated with SAE J1453 and ISO 8434-3 style face seal connections. They are often used in high-pressure systems and can be suitable up to about 6,000 psi depending on size, material, and manufacturer rating.
They are useful in harsh environments, but the O-ring material controls temperature compatibility. Buna-N, Viton or FKM, and other O-ring materials should be matched to the fluid and temperature range. Carbon steel, nickel-plated carbon steel, and stainless steel bodies are used depending on corrosion exposure.
How ORB Fittings Seal
ORB stands for O-ring boss. An ORB male fitting has straight threads with an O-ring at the base of the thread. The O-ring seals against a chamfer machined into the female port.
The threads provide holding force and orientation torque, while the synthetic rubber O-ring creates the fluid seal. ORB ports are common on valves, manifolds, and other hydraulic components because they provide a cleaner sealing method than many tapered pipe thread ports.
ORB Selection and Installation Risks
ORB fittings are used in medium- to high-pressure hydraulic applications and come in many body styles, angles, and adjustable forms. The male and female thread measurements must be confirmed before ordering.
ORB is not suitable for every condition. High temperature can damage the O-ring, and an incorrect threaded length can bottom out in the port before the O-ring is properly compressed.
The Main Difference
The core difference is O-ring location. ORFS places the O-ring in a groove on the face of the male fitting. ORB places the O-ring at the base of the male thread, where it seals into the port chamfer.
Both systems can make reliable hydraulic seals when the O-ring material, thread size, sealing surface, and installation depth are correct. They are not interchangeable simply because both use O-rings.
For replacement, identify whether the connection is face seal or boss seal, then record thread size, body style, O-ring material, port condition, and pressure requirement.
