Protecting Hydraulic Hose: Six Safety Factors for Longer Service Life

Hydraulic hoses are vital to construction, agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, and many other systems. They are also vulnerable when they are routed poorly, exposed to abrasion, run near hot surfaces, or left without protection in high-pressure areas.

The Danger of Hose Failure

A failed hose can cause downtime, fire risk, environmental contamination, slip hazards, and hydraulic injection injury. One serious marine fire investigation connected a hose burst with hydraulic fluid spraying onto a hot surface. The lesson is simple: hose protection is not only about hose life; it is also about people, equipment, and surrounding property.

1. Control Abrasion

Abrasion begins when the outer cover wears away. If multiple hoses flex together in a boom, arm, or moving assembly, use routing control, bundling, clamps, wraps, or guards to reduce rubbing.

2. Use Hose Sleeves for Spray and Pinhole Protection

Hose sleeves can help contain or deflect escaping fluid when a hose fails. They also add a barrier between the hose and abrasive surfaces.

3. Add Spring Guards Where Impact Is Likely

Spring guards are wound steel covers used where hoses may face cuts, crushing, gouging, or impact. They can protect a hose while allowing it to flex in harsh mobile equipment conditions.

4. Use Spiral Guards for Field Installation

Spiral wraps can protect against UV exposure, abrasion, cuts, crushing, and impact. They are useful because they can often be installed on loose hose or existing assemblies without disconnecting the line.

5. Route for Movement and Bend Radius

Protection will not solve a bad route. Avoid tight bends, twisting, rubbing, pulling, or contact with hot and sharp surfaces. A hose should have enough length and freedom to move without stressing the fitting ends.

6. Inspect Before Failure

Regular inspection should look for cover wear, leaks, flattened areas, corrosion, loose fittings, exposed reinforcement, and hose age. Replacing a questionable hose during maintenance is usually less expensive than cleaning up a burst line after it fails.
