Rust-Resistant Metals in Hydraulics: Brass and Stainless Steel Uses

Rust resistance matters in hydraulic systems because corrosion can damage threads, sealing surfaces, valves, pumps, and cylinders. Rust particles can also move through the fluid and create contamination problems.
Brass and stainless steel are two common rust-resistant materials, but they are not interchangeable in every hydraulic application.
Why Brass Resists Rust
Brass is a copper-zinc alloy, so it does not rust like iron or carbon steel. It can resist many water, air, and moderate industrial environments, and it is easy to machine into fittings, adapters, and valve parts.
Brass can also provide good ductility and toughness in many service conditions. In water, steam, humid environments, and some water-glycol systems, it may be a practical material when pressure and fluid compatibility are within limits.
Why Stainless Steel Resists Rust
Stainless steel contains chromium, which forms a protective passive film on the surface. When oxygen is present, that film can reform after minor surface damage, helping the part resist corrosion.
This makes stainless steel useful where fittings are exposed to moisture, washdown, chemicals, high temperature, pressure, or outdoor service. In chloride-heavy environments such as seawater or deicing exposure, the grade should be selected carefully.
Where Each Metal Fits
Brass is often used where corrosion resistance and machinability are needed in moderate-duty service. Stainless steel is preferred where pressure, chemical exposure, salt, temperature, or service life demand more resistance.
Some systems may include both materials, but mixed-metal assemblies need attention to galvanic corrosion. The fluid, surrounding metals, electrolyte exposure, and electrical contact can all affect compatibility.
Selection Checklist
Before choosing a rust-resistant fitting, check the fluid, pressure, temperature, cleaning chemicals, salt exposure, thread type, sealing surface, and maintenance access.
Rust resistance is not only about appearance. It protects sealing surfaces, prevents contamination, reduces leak risk, and keeps fittings serviceable when the system needs maintenance.
