Stainless Tubing and Stainless Pipe: Measurement, Shape, and Use Differences

Stainless tubing and stainless pipe are often discussed together, but they are ordered and used differently. The difference is important when selecting fittings, adapters, and supports for a system.
Pipe is commonly associated with fluid transport and nominal pipe size. Tubing is often selected where exact outside diameter, shape, or structural fit matters.
Measurement and Ordering
Pipe is usually ordered by nominal pipe size and schedule. The nominal size does not equal the exact outside or inside diameter, and the schedule changes wall thickness.
Tubing is usually ordered by actual outside diameter and wall thickness. That makes tubing common in systems where precise fit with compression, bite-type, flareless, or instrumentation-style fittings is required.
Shapes and Size Range
Pipe is typically round. Tubing can be round, square, rectangular, or shaped for structural and mechanical applications. Round stainless tubing is common in fluid, instrumentation, and process systems, while shaped tubing may be used for frames or supports.
The available sizes and tolerances can be different, so a pipe fitting should not be assumed to fit tubing of a similar apparent size.
Manufacturing and Materials
Both stainless pipe and tubing can be welded or seamless. Seamless products are made without a longitudinal weld seam, while welded products are formed and welded along the length.
Material grade also matters. 304 stainless is common for many general environments, while 316 stainless is often chosen for better resistance to chlorides, salt, and more corrosive service.
When replacing a line, confirm whether the system uses pipe or tube, then match the actual size, wall thickness, material grade, and fitting standard. The words pipe and tubing are not interchangeable in a parts order.
