Thread Tightening and Hydraulic Leaks: Tapered vs Parallel Sealing

Hydraulic leaks often begin at the fitting. A connection can look tight from the outside and still leak if the threads, sealing surface, or elastomer are not working the way that connection style requires.
The two most common tightening mistakes are simple: not enough clamp load, or too much. Under-tightening leaves small gaps that pressurized fluid can follow. Over-tightening can distort metal, crush a sealing surface, strip threads, or crack a port, creating a leak path that cannot be solved by tightening again.
Tapered Pipe Threads
NPT and MPT pipe threads seal through tapered thread interference. As the male and female threads engage, the taper wedges together. Because the thread path is spiral, thread sealant such as PTFE tape or pipe dope is usually used to fill the remaining path and support the seal.
Too little engagement can seep under pressure. Too much torque can split the female port or deform the male fitting. Sealant also has to be used correctly; too much tape can prevent proper engagement, while too little can leave the spiral leakage path open.
Parallel Thread Connections
Parallel thread styles such as ORB and many BSPP hydraulic connections do not rely on the threads as the primary seal. The threads provide clamping force, while an O-ring, bonded washer, or similar sealing element creates the leak barrier.
When these connections leak, the problem is often a missing O-ring, a cut seal, a flattened washer, a dirty face, or a fitting that is not seated squarely. Replacing the seal and checking the port face often matters more than adding torque.
What to Inspect Before Retightening
Before tightening a leaking connection, confirm the thread family, seat style, seal condition, and torque guidance. A tapered pipe connection, a flare fitting, an ORB port, and a BSPP washer seal all fail in different ways. Tightening the wrong part harder can make a small leak permanent.
