Welding Hydraulic Fittings: Preparation, Process, Inspection, and Testing

Welding hydraulic fittings requires clean preparation, the right process, compatible filler material, and careful inspection. A weld that looks acceptable from the outside can still leak or crack if the fit-up, heat, or material choice is wrong.
Always follow the fitting, tube, equipment, and welding procedure requirements for the material and pressure service involved.
Prepare the Work Area and Equipment
Start with a clean, dry work area and remove flammable materials. Use proper eye, hand, skin, and respiratory protection, and make sure the welding machine, ground, clamps, and shielding gas are ready before starting.
Hydraulic parts should be drained and cleaned so residual oil does not contaminate the weld or create a safety hazard.
Choose the Welding Process and Filler
TIG, MIG, and stick welding can all appear in industrial work, but the right process depends on material, joint design, thickness, and quality requirement. Stainless steel hydraulic components often require TIG or another controlled process to protect the weld quality.
Select filler metal that matches the base material. Steel, stainless steel, and aluminum components are not interchangeable, and the filler must be suitable for the final service environment.
Clean, Fit, Clamp, and Weld
Remove paint, rust, oil, scale, and debris with the approved cleaning method. Fit the parts squarely and clamp them so they do not move during welding.
Set the machine according to the procedure, then make a steady bead with controlled heat input. Allow the weld to cool as required instead of forcing a shortcut that could affect the joint.
Inspect and Pressure Test
After welding, inspect the joint for cracks, voids, porosity, undercut, and incomplete fusion. Defects should be repaired before the part is placed into hydraulic service.
The final check is leak testing under the correct procedure. Do not assume a welded hydraulic fitting is ready for service until it has been inspected and tested for the pressure and fluid circuit where it will be used.
