What Hydraulic Flanges Do in High-Pressure Connections

A hydraulic flange connects a hose, tube, pipe, or adapter to a port or block in a hydraulic system. It is used where a strong, leak-resistant, serviceable connection is needed under pressure.

Instead of relying only on pipe threads, many hydraulic flange connections use a flange head, split flange halves or a captive flange, bolts, washers, and an O-ring seal against the port face.

Where Hydraulic Flanges Are Used

Hydraulic flanges are common on heavy machinery, mobile equipment, industrial power units, and other systems where larger lines or high pressure make a threaded connection difficult to assemble or service.

They are often used to connect a hose or tube assembly to a manifold, pump, motor, cylinder, valve block, or other machine component.

Common Hydraulic Flange Styles

SAE Code 61 and SAE Code 62 are two widely used hydraulic flange styles. Code 62 is generally associated with higher pressure ratings and a heavier flange design than Code 61, but the exact choice must follow the equipment requirement.

Other equipment-specific flange patterns can also appear in the field. The flange head, bolt spacing, port face, O-ring groove, and pressure rating must match the machine. A close visual match is not enough.

Why Flanges Help System Efficiency and Safety

A properly selected flange creates a tight sealing point and supports the connection with multiple bolts. That can reduce leakage risk and make large hydraulic lines easier to assemble than a comparable threaded joint.

Because hydraulic oil leaks can create safety, cleanup, and downtime problems, flange condition matters. Damaged O-rings, dirty faces, incorrect bolts, or mismatched flange halves can cause leaks even when the main adapter is correct.

Installation and Selection Basics

Installation requires clean sealing surfaces, correct alignment, the right O-ring, and bolts tightened evenly to the proper specification. The split flange or captive flange should seat squarely against the port face without forcing the hose into a twist.

Selection should consider the hydraulic fluid, operating pressure, temperature, port design, hose or tube size, and OEM specification. When the equipment manufacturer specifies a flange code or pattern, that requirement should control the replacement choice.

A hydraulic flange is a small part of the system, but it carries a major sealing job. Correct identification and assembly help prevent leaks, damaged ports, and avoidable downtime.
