Why JIC Fittings Remain Widely Used in Hydraulic Systems

JIC fittings remain one of the most common hydraulic connection styles because so much existing equipment was built around the 37 degree flare standard. Tractors, skid steers, industrial machinery, and mobile hydraulic systems often use JIC threads and flare seats.

Installed Equipment Keeps JIC in Use

Replacement work often follows the original machine design. If the port, hose assembly, or adapter stack is already built around JIC, technicians usually replace like with like to restore service quickly.

Inventory systems also reinforce JIC use. Shops carry common JIC unions, elbows, adapters, and hose ends because they fit a large installed base.

ORFS Is a Strong Alternative

O-ring face seal fittings can provide excellent leak control, especially in high-pressure or high-vibration applications. Many OEMs use ORFS where reducing leak points is a priority.

ORFS does not make JIC obsolete. It means the connection style should be selected by the machine design, sealing requirement, pressure, vibration, and service practice.

Why Conversion Takes Time

Changing from JIC to ORFS across an entire fleet requires new adapters, new hose ends, changed bills of material, updated maintenance instructions, and new inventory. That is why JIC continues to dominate many repair and replacement situations.

Technicians are also familiar with JIC assembly and inspection. Familiarity does not remove the need to check the flare seat, thread condition, and mating angle, but it does reduce uncertainty in field repairs.

Use the Existing Standard Correctly

JIC fittings are reliable when the 37 degree flare seat, thread, material, and pressure rating match the application. Do not force JIC into a port designed for another sealing style, and do not assume a fitting is correct based on thread engagement alone.
