Why Metric Hydraulic Fittings Are Common Worldwide

Metric thread hydraulic fittings are widely used around the world, but the word "metric" can hide several different connection families. DIN, BSP, JIS, Komatsu, Kobelco-style connections, and true metric threads may all appear in the same maintenance conversation.
That matters because some of these connections are based on metric pitch, while others come from inch or British thread systems with metric equivalents.
Metric Does Not Mean One Standard
DIN 24 degree bite-type fittings are common in Europe and follow DIN 2353 and ISO 8434-1 geometry. Some versions include a captured elastomeric seal for improved sealing and reuse. Other DIN metric styles include 60 degree cone and 45 degree cone connections for specific applications.
JIS metric fittings are common on equipment made in Japan and Korea. JIS adapters may use 30 degree flare and 60 degree cone connections. Japanese tapered pipe threads can be compatible with BSPT tapered fittings, but a Japanese male thread without a 30 degree flare will not mate correctly with a BSPP female swivel that uses a conical seat.
Komatsu also uses a 30 degree flare metric style on mobile equipment. In North America, some heavy equipment uses inch-measured four-bolt flange patterns, so global equipment fleets often contain both metric and inch-based hydraulic connections.
Metric Use Is Not All or Nothing
Countries are often described as either metric or non-metric, but real industrial use is more mixed. The United States still uses miles, gallons, and inches in many public settings, while car parts, manufacturing equipment, racing distances, currency production, and export packaging often include metric specifications.
Canada and the United Kingdom also show mixed practice. Road signs, food packaging, sports fields, body measurements, and vehicle speed can follow different conventions. For hydraulic buyers, the important point is not the country label; it is the actual standard used on the machine.
Why Metric Measurement Is Practical
The metric system is simple because it is based on tens. Millimeters, centimeters, meters, grams, kilograms, milliliters, liters, pascals, and bar fit into a consistent measurement system.
That consistency helps global manufacturing, but it does not make a metric hydraulic component automatically better than an inch-based one. A 75 mm bore and a 3 inch bore may describe nearly the same size. A 19 mm tube and a 3/4 inch tube may look close. Performance depends on the component design, not the unit label alone.
Where the Risk Appears in Hydraulic Threads
The risk appears when a near match is treated as a correct match. A 3/4 inch male thread should not be forced into a 19 mm female port just because the sizes look close. The pitch, flank form, seat, and sealing method can be different, and the connection may leak or damage the port.
Metric threads are measured by pitch, the distance from one thread crest to the next. Inch threads are commonly measured by threads per inch. That difference alone can make two similar-looking fittings incompatible.
Global Equipment Uses Both Systems
Large OEMs often publish dimensions in both inch and metric units because equipment is sold into global markets. Pumps, shafts, flanges, ports, cylinders, and hose connections may be available in either system.
For replacement work, identify the connection on the actual machine: metric pitch, inch thread count, cone angle, O-ring location, flange code, tube size, and port form. The system may be global, but the replacement fitting must match the local connection exactly.
