Why NPT, BSPP, and ORB Hydraulic Threads Do Not Interchange

NPT, BSPP, and ORB threads can look similar when viewed quickly, but they are built to different standards. They do not seal the same way and should not be forced into one another.
The safest approach is to identify the thread type before selecting the adapter or fitting.
NPT Uses a Tapered Thread Seal
NPT pipe threads are tapered. As the male and female threads tighten, the taper creates a wedging action. Thread sealant or tape is normally used to help seal the spiral leak path through the threads.
Because the seal depends on thread engagement, over-tightening can damage the port while under-tightening can leak.
BSPP and ORB Are Parallel Threads
BSPP and ORB threads are parallel rather than tapered. Their diameter does not tighten through a taper as the fitting is installed.
BSPP connections usually seal with a washer, bonded seal, cone seat, or other sealing surface depending on the fitting design. ORB connections seal with an O-ring against the port face or chamfer, not by wedging the threads together.
Pitch and Thread Form Also Differ
Thread pitch, flank angle, and profile vary across these standards. An NPT male may start into a BSPP or ORB port, but resistance quickly increases because the threads are not actually compatible.
That mistake can damage both the fitting and the port. Once the port threads are distorted, replacing the adapter alone may not fix the leak.
Correct Identification Comes First
Before replacing a part, check whether the connection is tapered or parallel, measure the thread, and identify the sealing surface. Use a proper conversion adapter when two standards must meet.
NPT, BSPP, and ORB can all be reliable hydraulic connections when used in the right place. The problem comes from treating them as substitutes.
