Back Ferrule Failures: Installation, Vibration, and Leak Path Causes

A ferrule helps seal a compression fitting assembly in tube and pipe systems. In hydraulic, gas, plumbing, medical, and process applications, the ferrule is small, but the seal it creates is critical.

Fitting and ferrule failures can come from corrosion, poor installation, vibration, and leak paths in the assembly. Dual-ferrule fittings can be highly reliable, but the back ferrule has to grip the tube correctly and remain protected from damaging loads.

Incorrect Installation

Dual-ferrule fittings have been used for decades because they can create secure, leak-resistant joints in pressure and vibration service. Their precision also means assembly details matter.

The front ferrule, back ferrule, nut, and fitting body have to be installed in the correct order and tightened by the correct method. If the back ferrule is reversed, misplaced, under-set, or over-tightened, it may not grip the tube as intended. That can lead to leaks, tube damage, or ferrule failure.

Exposure to High Vibration

The back ferrule grips the tubing and supports the seal. In a vibrating system, the joint or support point can become the place where destructive force concentrates.

If the tube is allowed to vibrate directly through the fitting, the back ferrule can be loaded repeatedly until it wears, cracks, or loses grip. Tube supports, routing, clamps, and vibration isolation are important parts of ferrule life.

Additional Sealing Points

Compression fittings can reduce some leak paths compared with threaded pipe assemblies, but a dual-ferrule connection still introduces its own sealing points. Each interface has to be clean, aligned, and correctly tightened.

If the tubing is scratched, out of round, poorly cut, or misaligned, the ferrule may not seal evenly. Extra sealing interfaces then become places where gas or fluid can escape.

What to Check When a Ferrule Fails

Inspect installation order, tube preparation, ferrule orientation, vibration exposure, supports, material compatibility, and corrosion. A failed back ferrule should not be treated as an isolated part until the tube and fitting environment are checked.
