Ground support equipment works in the short window between an aircraft arriving and leaving again. Hose assemblies on this equipment see pressure, movement, vibration, weather, abrasion, and frequent handling, so protection is not a cosmetic detail. It helps keep service equipment available, reduces avoidable hose failure, and supports safe aircraft turnaround.

In airport and maintenance operations, ground support equipment can include deicers, jetways, pushback tractors, snowplows, cargo loaders, refueling pump units, auxiliary power units, airplane tugs, baggage tractors, and cargo belt loaders. Many of these machines rely on hydraulic power, and even non-hydraulic hose such as fueling hose often needs protection from wear and exposure.

Why Hose Protection Matters Around Aircraft

Ground handling depends on speed, accuracy, and repeatable equipment performance. A hose failure can slow loading, boarding, deicing, fueling, or runway clearing, and it can also create fluid leakage, cleanup work, or operator exposure. Maintenance practices and design requirements for GSE are influenced by aviation and equipment standards, including SAE and ISO guidance, as well as customer or government procurement requirements for some fleets.

The common problem is that GSE hose rarely sits in an easy, protected location. Hoses are pulled, flexed, routed near moving structures, exposed to water and deicing chemicals, and sometimes forced through compact spaces. The right sleeve, guard, wrap, or bend control can protect the hose cover and fittings before damage reaches the reinforcement or sealing area.

Refueling Hose and High-Visibility Protection

Refueling hose is one of the most visible hose applications on the ramp. It is not normally a hydraulic hose, but it is repeatedly dragged, handled, and exposed to abrasion. Because fuel handling has its own safety risks, protecting the hose cover and making the line easy to see are both important.

Spiral guard wrap is often used on refueling hose to add abrasion resistance and flex strain relief. High-visibility colors such as yellow or orange help workers see hose routes around the aircraft and fuel truck. Vinyl hose wrap can also be used where abrasion resistance, UV exposure, chemical splash, and color identification matter. Blue, green, yellow, and other visible colors can make hose routing easier to manage in active service areas.

Jetways and Moving Hydraulic Hose

Jetways, or jet bridges, move between the terminal and the aircraft door. Their position and elevation are adjusted during operation, and many systems use hydraulic power to make those movements. That means the hose is not only pressurized; it may also flex every time the bridge is positioned.

Jetway hose assemblies can be exposed to abrasion, tight bend radii, repeated movement, and pressure spikes. Hose protection should be selected around the actual routing path: where the hose rubs, where it bends, where it is close to moving structure, and where the fitting end needs extra support.

Airport Snowplows, Brooms, and Heavy GSE

Airport snow removal equipment is much larger than a typical highway plow. Large runway plows can use very wide blades, and some machines carry high-performance broom attachments for clearing snow, slush, ice, and debris. The hydraulic power unit has to lift, lower, float, and angle those blades and brooms under heavy load.

Those hydraulic circuits leave hose assemblies in exposed, moving locations. Ice, rocks, debris, vibration, and component contact can cut or wear the hose cover. On this type of equipment, hose bundles, protective sleeve wraps, and heavy-duty spring guards are often used to control groups of hoses and reduce damage from abrasion, crushing, cuts, gouges, and impact.

Common Protection Products Used on GSE Hose

Hydraulic hose sleeving is used where a burst or pinhole leak could send fluid toward an operator, nearby equipment, or the surrounding work area. Line-of-sight sleeving helps contain escaping fluid and gives the hose cover another layer of abrasion resistance.

Grip shrink tubing can reinforce the area near a fitting. Adhesive-lined shrink products help keep the sleeve fixed in place, which is useful where vibration or repeated movement might otherwise let protection slide away from the fitting end.

Hose protectors are often installed close to fitting connections or point-of-contact wear areas. Durable protectors with molded grooves can be secured with cable ties, helping keep the wear guard located where the hose rubs against another surface.

Bend restrictors are used where routing space is tight or where the hose could be bent beyond its minimum bend radius. By supporting the hose near the fitting and controlling the outside of the bend, a bend restrictor can reduce stress, lower the chance of burst at the bend, and help extend assembly life. Some designs attach at the fitting lip so clamps or adhesives are not needed.

Some GSE applications may also require fire sleeving where hose or wiring is exposed to heat or flame risk. Heat can accelerate hose aging, and overheating can contribute to thermal expansion and premature breakdown of elastomers in the cover and tube.

What to Check During GSE Hose Review

When reviewing ground support equipment hose assemblies, look at the operating motion first. Identify where the hose flexes, where it rubs, where it enters a fitting, and where it may be exposed to ice, debris, chemicals, fuel, UV, or heat. A hose may need more than one kind of protection if it has both bend stress and abrasion exposure.

The protection choice should match the risk. Use sleeving where fluid containment and line-of-sight protection matter, spiral guards or spring guards for abrasion and impact, shrink tubing near fitting ends, protectors for localized wear, bend restrictors for tight routing, and fire sleeving for high-heat exposure. For GSE, the goal is not just to protect the hose, but to keep the equipment ready for the next aircraft movement.
