Hose Clamp Types and Sizes for Hydraulic Fitting Connections

Hose clamps secure a hose to a fitting, nipple, or similar connection point. The clamp helps stabilize the joint so fluid can move through the hose without slipping, spilling, or leaking.
Clamp size should be checked after the hose is assembled on the fitting, because the usable clamp range depends on the outside diameter of the assembled connection.
Worm Drive Hose Clamps
Worm drive clamps are common because they are simple, quick to install, compact, and adjustable across a useful size range. They are often used in lower-pressure automotive, agricultural, marine, and utility applications.
The main risk is sizing. If the clamp is too large, the band can protrude and become a safety issue. If the clamp is tightened too far to compensate for a poor size match, the clamp can form a distorted D shape and create a leak path.
T-Bolt Hose Clamps
T-bolt clamps are used where higher pressure gradients, larger diameters, heavy vibration, or harsh service conditions are expected. They are common around industrial machinery, heavy trucks, off-road equipment, and agricultural irrigation systems.
A T-bolt clamp is designed to hold more evenly around the hose. Its smooth inner surface can reduce hose damage, and the clamp is less likely to pop off than a light worm drive clamp when vibration is present.
High Torque Hose Clamps
High torque clamps are heavy-duty worm drive clamps. They provide more torque capacity than standard worm drive clamps while still being quick to fit, reusable, and easy to retighten after temperature-related expansion or contraction.
They are used in automotive, marine, and agricultural applications where a stronger clamp is needed but the connection still fits the worm-drive style.
Constant Tension and Spring Clamps
Hot fluid and temperature cycling can change the size of hoses and nipples. Spring clamps and constant tension clamps are designed to respond to that movement.
Spring clamps maintain band tension without repeated adjustment. Constant tension clamps use Belleville washers that compress and act like a spring. These clamps are often used in cooling systems and other applications where cold flow leakage can happen during temperature changes.
How to Size a Hose Clamp
Hose clamp size refers to the minimum and maximum usable clamping diameter. To choose the correct clamp, first assemble the hose on the fitting, then measure the outside diameter of the hose and fitting together.
Use calipers for the assembled outside diameter. Do not size the clamp only from the bare hose, because the fitting or nipple can change the outside diameter where the clamp actually sits.
Before ordering, confirm the clamp type, usable diameter range, hose material, fitting style, pressure level, temperature range, vibration level, and whether the clamp is being used for a hydraulic, cooling, fuel, air, or low-pressure transfer connection.
