How Hydraulic Hose Fittings Are Crimped Correctly

Crimping a hydraulic hose fitting is a controlled assembly process. The hose, fitting, ferrule, crimp die, and crimp diameter have to match the approved specification for that hose series.

A good crimp creates a secure connection without crushing the hose, cutting the tube, or leaving the fitting loose enough to leak or pull off.

Tools and Components

The basic setup includes the correct hose, matching fitting, ferrule or collar, crimp machine, proper die set, cutting tool, lubricant if specified, and a way to measure final crimp diameter.

Before assembly, confirm that the fitting style matches the equipment connection and that the hose construction is approved for that fitting series.

Cutting and Cleaning the Hose

Cut the hose squarely to the required length. A rough or angled cut can interfere with insertion depth and may leave reinforcement wires exposed unevenly.

After cutting, clean the hose bore and end area. Debris from cutting can contaminate the hydraulic system, damage valves, or interfere with the fitting stem.

Preparing and Attaching the Fitting

Mark the insertion depth when the assembly procedure calls for it. Push the fitting into the hose fully and squarely so the stem is seated at the correct depth before crimping.

If the hose uses a skive or no-skive construction, follow the hose manufacturer's requirement. Removing the wrong amount of cover or skipping a required preparation step can change crimp retention.

Crimping and Inspection

Place the assembly in the crimper with the correct die and setting. Crimp only to the specified diameter, then measure the finished crimp in the proper location.

Inspect for cracks, uneven compression, exposed reinforcement, incorrect insertion depth, damaged threads, and a crimp diameter outside tolerance. A hose assembly should not be put into service until the finished crimp matches the specification.
