How to Connect Hydraulic Fittings: Threads, Hose Assembly, and Clean Installation

Hydraulic fittings connect hoses, tubes, pipes, manifolds, ports, valves, and other components so fluid can move through the system under pressure. A good connection keeps flow controlled and prevents leakage at the joint.
Connecting fittings correctly starts with identification. Male and female ends, thread standard, seal type, hose size, and assembly method all have to match.
What Hydraulic Fittings Connect
Hydraulic fittings may join hose to hose, hose to tube, hose to a manifold, pipe to a valve, or a line to a cylinder, pump, motor, or adapter. They can also change direction, split flow, reduce size, or raise and lower the routing path.
The fitting body is only one part of the connection. The sealing surface, thread form, and hose attachment method are just as important.
Identify the Thread Style First
Thread standards can look similar but still be incompatible. NPT uses a 60 degree tapered pipe thread. BSP uses a 55 degree thread profile. Metric, ORB, ORFS, JIC, and DIN-style connections each seal differently.
Use a thread gauge, calipers, and seat inspection before assembly. If the pitch, diameter, or seal surface does not match, the connection should not be forced.
Match Male and Female Ends
A fitting connection usually has a male side and a female side. The male may have external threads, a cone, a tube end, or a hose stem. The female may have internal threads, a flare seat, a port, or a face-seal surface.
The two sides must match by geometry and seal method. Straight threads, tapered threads, flare seats, O-rings, ferrules, and washers are not interchangeable sealing ideas.
Choose the Hose Assembly Method
Hydraulic hose fittings may be permanently crimped, permanently swaged, or field attachable depending on the hose and fitting family. Each method has its own tooling and inspection requirements.
Permanent crimping is common for hydraulic hose assemblies because it gives controlled compression around the hose. Field attachable fittings can help in some service conditions, but only when the hose and fitting are approved for that style.
Measure and Cut the Hose
Before installing hose ends, measure overall length and account for fitting orientation. A hose that is too short can pull on the fitting. A hose that is too long can rub, kink, or trap heat.
Cut the hose squarely and clean the end. Contamination from cutting can damage valves, pumps, and seals after the system is started.
Install and Orient the Fitting
Insert the fitting to the specified depth and align angled ends before crimping or tightening. For elbows, orientation matters because a small rotation can change hose routing and bend radius.
After crimping, check crimp diameter, ferrule position, insertion depth, and visible defects. For threaded ends, tighten to the correct torque and seal method.
Clean and Test the Assembly
Clean the hose assembly before installation. Caps, plugs, flushing, and compressed-air procedures depend on shop practice, but the goal is the same: keep particles out of the hydraulic circuit.
After installation, pressurize carefully and inspect for leaks, twisting, rubbing, sharp bends, and movement under load. If a joint leaks, identify the cause rather than applying extra torque blindly.
