Hydraulic Connections for Oil and Gas Equipment: Upstream Application Checklist

Upstream oil and gas equipment uses hydraulic and instrumentation connections in pressure, vibration, corrosion, heat, and abrasion environments. The correct fitting, adapter, valve, hose, and protection choice depends on where the component is installed.

Onshore Compression and Fracturing Equipment

Gas compression units increase gas pressure for transport and processing, often across staged pressure ranges. Single ferrule and double ferrule tube fittings are used where gas-tight metal tube connections are needed, with double ferrule designs adding grip and sealing control.

Frack units use high-pressure pumps, hoses, steel piping, and manifolds to move water, sand, and chemicals into the formation. Tube fittings and adapters in these systems must tolerate pressure pulses and repeated impulse cycles.

Land Drilling Rigs

Conventional land drilling rigs work in rugged environments with mechanical stress, temperature swings, and abrasive surfaces. Hose protection is important because hydraulic lines can rub against equipment, hot surfaces, and rough structures.

Sleeves, wraps, guards, and proper routing help extend hose life and reduce the chance of a worn cover becoming a leak point.

Offshore and Subsea Conditions

Subsea drilling exposes connections to saltwater, pressure, and temperature extremes. Stainless steel, 316L, and higher alloy materials may be required when corrosion resistance is critical.

Directional drilling and offshore hydraulic circuits may use water glycol fluids and leak-resistant fitting styles such as JIC, ORB, and ORFS. The sealing method has to match the pressure, fluid, vibration, and maintenance conditions.

ROV Hose and Tube Protection

Remote operated vehicles contain multiple hoses and tubes that work around rocks, metal equipment, current, and tight routing. Hose guards and abrasion sleeves protect against external damage before it becomes a leak or line failure.

For oil and gas applications, connection selection is not only a size match. Pressure range, alloy, traceability, cleanliness, hose protection, and seal style all affect whether the assembly can survive the field environment.
