Hydraulic Flow Control: Pumps, Valves, Flow Rate, and Actuator Speed

Hydraulic pumps do not create useful system pressure by themselves. A pump creates flow. Pressure develops when that flow meets resistance from the load, valve position, line size, actuator, or other parts of the circuit.

What the Pump Does

The pump first creates inlet action that lets atmospheric pressure move fluid from the reservoir into the inlet line. It then forces fluid from the outlet into the hydraulic system. That movement is flow, and the circuit resistance turns that flow into working pressure.

Flow Control Valves

Flow control valves regulate how quickly fluid reaches cylinders and motors. Common valve types include ball, butterfly, diaphragm, gate, needle, and plug valves. By changing flow rate, these valves influence actuator speed and the rate at which energy is transferred to the load.

Mass Flow and Volumetric Flow

Flow rate can be described in more than one way. Mass flow is the mass of fluid passing per unit time and relates to density. Volumetric flow is the volume of fluid moving per unit time and depends on fluid velocity and the cross-sectional area of the hose, tube, pipe, or valve opening.

Directional Control Valves

Directional valves send fluid to the correct part of the circuit at the correct time. They can hold fluid in standby, shift to perform work, and return to neutral after the function is complete. In some circuits, directional valves may also throttle flow and influence pressure or flow rate.
