Hydraulic Hose Selection for Heavy Lifting and Handling Equipment

Heavy lifting and handling equipment depends on hydraulic hoses that can carry pressure safely while still bending and routing through moving machine sections. Hose selection affects safety, uptime, electrical risk, routing, and maintenance cost.
Important details include temperature range, pressure rating, bend radius, cover material, support brackets, and whether the application needs non-conductive thermoplastic hose rather than steel-wire reinforced hose.
Where Heavy Lifting Hoses Are Used
Heavy lifting applications include aerial-lift platforms, mobile lift equipment, construction machinery, agricultural equipment, hydraulic cranes, lift trucks, rescue tools, foundries, steel mills, shipyards, mines, wheelchair lifts, and hydraulic jacks.
These systems may lift personnel, move heavy loads, or operate near electrical hazards. A hose that is acceptable for a general hydraulic circuit may not be suitable for an aerial lift or utility machine.
Non-Conductive Thermoplastic Hose
Thermoplastic hydraulic hose can provide an electrically insulating effect when the reinforcement is also nonconductive, such as polyester, nylon, or PTFE. This matters where a hydraulic line may be near electrical equipment.
SAE 100R8 is a high-pressure thermoplastic hose for petroleum, water-based, and synthetic fluids, commonly listed for service from -40 F to 212 F. SAE 100R7 is a medium-pressure thermoplastic hose for petroleum and synthetic oils, commonly listed for continuous service from -65 F to 200 F.
Bend Radius and Routing
Heavy lifting hoses should not be bent tighter than the minimum allowed radius. Support brackets can help hold the hose in the correct position and reduce flexing that would shorten hose life.
Thermoplastic hose can offer better flexibility than comparable steel-wire reinforced hose, sometimes with a much smaller bend radius. That flexibility can help in compact moving equipment where routing space is limited.
Rubber vs Bonded Thermoplastic Hose
Rubber hydraulic hose has long been common, but repeated flexing can fatigue the reinforcement and cover. Rubber can also become brittle at low temperatures.
Thermoplastic hose can better tolerate continuous flexing in some applications and can perform well in cold conditions. It also offers chemical and corrosion resistance advantages in certain services.
Bonded thermoplastic hose assemblies combine multiple hoses into a single routed section. This can reduce installation time, lower assembly weight, and prevent individual hoses from rubbing against each other until the covers scuff and leak.
Why Standard Industrial Hose Is Not Enough
Hydraulic hoses operate inside a closed pressurized system. They must handle internal pressure, temperature, load movement, and routing angles while protecting operators and equipment.
For lifting, forging, stamping, excavation, handling, and aerial work, hose selection should be treated as a safety decision. The hose, fittings, routing, supports, and pressure rating all have to match the machine and duty cycle.
