Hydraulic Hose, Tubing, and Fitting Compatibility Checklist

Hydraulic hoses, metal tubing, and fittings all move fluid through a system, but they do not serve the same job or tolerate the same conditions. The right combination depends on pressure, temperature, movement, environment, media, and the equipment connection points.
A compatible assembly lets fluid move from pumps to valves, cylinders, motors, reservoirs, filters, accumulators, and sensors without avoidable leakage, restriction, or premature failure.
Start With the Application
Hydraulic systems appear in steel mills, earthmoving equipment, chemical and food processing, aerospace equipment, oil and gas work, mining, and many other heavy-duty applications. A hose and fitting combination that works in one system may be wrong in another.
One machine may use standard elastomeric hose with steel fittings. Another may combine flexible hose with stainless tube and fittings because part of the system is stationary or exposed to food, chemicals, saltwater, or washdown.
Why Hose, Tube, and Fitting Selection Matters
Hydraulic hose is used where movement, vibration, routing flexibility, or service access matters. Metal tubing is often used for more permanent routes where the line can be supported and protected. Fittings connect the hose or tube to ports, valves, pumps, cylinders, and other components.
If one part of the assembly is under-rated or mismatched, the whole connection can lose efficiency, leak, fail early, or create a safety risk. Severe environments make the selection more important. A subsea unit, for example, may need components that can remain in service for years because retrieval and maintenance are extremely costly.
Use the STAMPED Method
The STAMPED method is a practical way to check hose and fitting compatibility. It stands for Size, Temperature, Application, Material or Media, Pressure, Ends, and Delivery.
- Size: confirm hose inside diameter, outside diameter, tube size, and overall assembly length so flow is not restricted and the assembly is not forced into a bend.
- Temperature: check both fluid temperature and ambient temperature. Exceeding the hose or seal rating can shorten service life quickly.
- Application: match the original equipment setup unless operating conditions have changed. Motion, flexing, abrasion, routing, and exposure all matter.
- Material or media: confirm the hydraulic fluid or conveyed product, plus outside exposure such as chemicals, UV light, ozone, saltwater, or washdown.
- Pressure: the assembly rating is controlled by the lowest-rated component. Pressure spikes should be considered, not only normal working pressure.
- Ends: identify the fitting style, orientation, attachment method, thread, seal, and port standard required by the equipment.
- Delivery: protect components from contamination during storage and transport. Caps, cleaning, and correct handling help keep debris out of the system.
Compatibility Is More Than Thread Size
A fitting can appear to thread into place and still be wrong for the assembly. The sealing surface, hose construction, tube material, fitting pressure rating, and installation method have to match.
Before replacing a hose, tube, or fitting, record the connection family, pressure rating, hose construction, tube size, media, environmental exposure, and the original routing. Proper selection reduces downtime and helps keep hydraulic systems reliable and repeatable.
