Instrumentation Valves in Power Generation: Materials, Ferrules, and Valve Configurations

Power generation equipment uses instrumentation valves and fittings wherever small lines need reliable isolation, routing, sampling, or control. In these applications, the valve is not selected by size alone; material, tube connection style, actuation, and configuration all affect service life.

Material Options

Stainless steel and brass are common instrumentation valve materials. Stainless steel is often preferred where corrosion resistance, heat exposure, or harsher service conditions are expected. Brass may fit lighter-duty instrument air, water, or compatible low-corrosion service when the pressure and media allow it.

Single and Double Ferrule Connections

Instrumentation valves may use single ferrule or double ferrule tube connections. The ferrule design must grip and seal the tubing without damaging it, so tube material, tube hardness, and installation practice remain important.

2-Way and 3-Way Valve Layouts

Two-way valves are used to open or isolate a line. Three-way valves can route flow between ports or support instrument arrangements where flow needs to be redirected. In power generation systems, the right layout helps keep measurement, sampling, and control lines serviceable.

Actuator Mounting and Availability

Some instrumentation valves are designed for actuator mounting so the valve can be automated rather than operated by hand. Before replacing a valve, confirm the connection style, body material, number of ways, actuation requirement, and tubing size so the new valve matches the system.
