ORFS Fitting Assembly: Four Wet-Torque Steps

Correct ORFS fitting assembly is important because the connection relies on a clean O-ring face seal and controlled clamping load. Field shortcuts can reduce seal life, deform threads, or create leak points.

A careful assembly process keeps the O-ring seated, reduces friction variation, and helps the fitting reach the intended clamp load without overtightening.

Step One: Inspect the Fitting

Before assembly, inspect the ORFS fitting for contamination, shipping damage, storage damage, or a damaged sealing face. Confirm that the O-ring is installed correctly in the groove on the fitting face.

If the O-ring is missing, twisted, cut, or sitting outside the groove, the connection should not be tightened. The face seal has to be correct before torque is applied.

Step Two: Lubricate Threads and O-Ring

Use the system hydraulic fluid or a light compatible lubricant on the threads and the O-ring. This is the wet-torque step that helps reduce friction during tightening.

Friction can change between assemblies because plating, material, coating thickness, and thread quality are not always identical. Lubrication makes the torque result more consistent.

Step Three: Seat the Face Seal by Hand

Bring the face seal flange against the O-ring and finger-tighten the flange nut. The parts should seat squarely without using torque to pull a misaligned connection into place.

This hand-fit step is useful because it can reveal damaged threads, poor alignment, or a seal that is not sitting correctly before the final tightening step.

Step Four: Tighten to the Rated Torque

Use the proper rated torque value for the fitting assembly. Lubricated threads require less torque to create the needed clamp load, which helps protect the seal area.

Overtightening can deform or yield the threads. Once the threads lose adequate clamping force, severe operating conditions and extended service can turn the connection into a leak point.

Wet torquing does not replace correct parts or correct torque data. It supports consistent assembly so the ORFS fitting can maintain efficiency and service life.
