STAMPED Hose Selection: Seven Details That Define a Hydraulic Assembly

STAMPED is a practical way to collect the information needed for hydraulic hose selection. The acronym stands for Size, Temperature, Application, Material, Pressure, Ends, and Delivery.

Each item matters because a hose assembly is not only a length of hose. It is a matched combination of hose construction, fittings, crimp data, routing, fluid compatibility, and operating conditions.

S: Size

Hose size starts with inside diameter. The ID must support the required flow without creating excessive velocity, pressure drop, or heat. A hose that is too small can restrict flow and damage the system; a hose that is too large may be harder to route and more expensive than necessary.

Assembly length also matters. The hose must reach the connection points without stretching, kinking, rubbing, or violating the minimum bend radius.

T: Temperature

Check both fluid temperature and ambient temperature. Hot hydraulic oil can age the tube, cover, and seals. Cold weather can make some hose materials stiff and harder to route.

The hose should be rated for the full operating range, including startup, continuous duty, and any temperature spikes that occur near engines, exhaust, outdoor exposure, or process heat.

A: Application

The application describes how the hose will live in the machine. Look at movement, abrasion, bend behavior, impulse cycles, vibration, external chemicals, weather, and whether the hose is exposed to crushing or dragging.

Expected service life is also part of the application. A stationary line in a protected cabinet does not need the same cover or reinforcement as a moving line on mobile equipment.

M: Material

The hose tube must be compatible with the fluid. Petroleum oil, water-glycol, coolant, air, fuel, and chemical fluids can require different compounds. The cover material must also match the outside environment.

Fitting and seal materials should be checked at the same time so the full assembly is compatible with the fluid and exposure.

P: Pressure

Working pressure is the normal system pressure, but pressure spikes and impulse loads may be higher. The hose and fittings must be rated for the application, and burst pressure should not be treated as a working limit.

Pressure rating depends on the hose, the fitting, the crimp specification, and the finished assembly.

E: Ends

The hose ends must match the equipment ports and the hose construction. JIC, ORFS, NPT, BSP, metric, flange, and other ends use different sealing methods.

Confirm thread type, seat angle, O-ring style, fitting orientation, and crimp compatibility before assembly.

D: Delivery

Delivery includes labeling, inspection, packaging, and documentation. A hose should arrive with the correct length, fitting orientation, pressure rating, and any needed test or traceability information.

Recording hose data makes future replacements faster and reduces the chance that the next repair starts from guesswork.
