Three Hydraulic Hose Constructions and Where They Fit

Hydraulic hoses carry pressurized fluid between ports, pumps, valves, cylinders, motors, and reservoirs. They provide flexible connections in systems that may see high pressure, movement, temperature change, abrasion, or vacuum.
Hose selection should follow the application. A useful starting point is STAMPED: Size, Temperature, Application, Media or Material, Pressure, Ends, and Delivery. The hose construction matters, but so do the fittings at each end.
Three common hose constructions
There are many SAE and EN hose specifications, but the practical choices often start with three broad constructions: reinforced rubber hose, thermoplastic hose, and PTFE hose with stainless braid. Return hose is a separate consideration because it may need suction support rather than pressure-line reinforcement.
Before choosing among them, confirm hose size, working pressure, burst factor, fluid, temperature, bend radius, cover requirement, fitting ends, and delivery timing.
Reinforced rubber hose
Rubber hydraulic hose is common across mobile and industrial hydraulic systems. It may use textile reinforcement for lower-pressure applications or steel wire braid or spiral reinforcement for higher-pressure service.
One-wire braid is used in some lower-pressure hydraulic systems. Two-wire braid is common in medium-pressure applications. Four-wire and six-wire constructions are often used in heavy equipment, high-pressure service, and applications with frequent pressure impulse.
Rubber hose is popular because it offers broad hydraulic-fluid compatibility, flexibility, and availability. It is still not a generic choice. Pressure, abrasion, temperature, bend radius, and route all have to match the machine.
Thermoplastic hose
Thermoplastic hydraulic hose commonly uses a nylon tube, synthetic fiber reinforcement, and a polyurethane cover. It is often used in material handling equipment, compact routing, applications near electrical systems, and areas where wire reinforcement is not preferred.
Thermoplastic hose can offer abrasion resistance and low conductivity depending on the specification. It can handle demanding pressure ranges in the correct design, but it should not replace rubber hose unless the hose series, pressure, temperature, fluid, bend radius, and fitting compatibility are confirmed.
PTFE hose with stainless braid
PTFE hose uses a PTFE tube with stainless steel braid reinforcement. It is often selected for chemical compatibility, corrosion resistance, and higher-temperature service. Stainless braid does not need the same outer cover used on many rubber hoses, but the installed environment still matters.
PTFE hose has its own sizing and bend-radius rules. It should not be forced into a tight bend. If it kinks, the damaged area can become a weak point. In some PTFE hose numbering, the inside diameter may differ from the dash-size convention used with other hose materials, so the specification should be checked carefully.
Return hose
Return lines do not always need the same construction as pressure lines. A hydraulic return hose may use a rubber tube with textile braid and a helical wire to permit suction. The line still needs to match fluid, temperature, route, and pressure or suction requirements.
Do not choose a return hose only by appearance. It may look less severe than a pressure line, but if it collapses, kinks, or is routed poorly, the hydraulic system can still suffer.
Fitting ends complete the selection
The hose construction is only part of the assembly. The ends decide whether the hose installs correctly. A replacement may need JIC, ORB, ORFS, NPT, BSP, metric, flange, hose barb, straight, elbow, swivel, fixed, or bulkhead connections.
If the hose type changes, confirm the hose-end compatibility and crimp requirements. If the fitting angle changes, confirm the route. If the adapter at the machine port is worn or damaged, a new hose assembly can still leak.
The safest hose choice is the one that matches the full STAMPED picture, not only the visible hose material.
