Types of Hose Fittings and When to Use Them

Hose fittings connect hoses, pipes, and tubes to hydraulic systems. They help hold a seal, maintain hose pressure, and reduce twisting at the connection. The choice can be confusing because hose fittings vary by shape, material, thread form, sealing method, and assembly style.

The main split is between permanent crimp fittings and field attachable fittings. After that, the machine-side connection can be grouped by metal seal, soft seal, or tapered thread sealing.

Permanent crimp fittings

Permanent crimp fittings are one of the most common hose-fitting categories. They require a crimping machine so the fitting can be attached to the hose with the correct compression. A well-made crimp helps the assembly hold pressure and lets hydraulic fluid move through the hose without leakage.

This style depends on the correct hose construction, fitting series, ferrule, and crimp setting. If the crimp is wrong, the hose end may leak or fail even when the fitting looks correct from the outside.

Field attachable fittings

Field attachable fittings are assembled differently from permanent crimp fittings. They are often grouped by body shape, such as plugs, unions, elbows, and crosses, depending on how the hose or tube connection needs to turn, join, or close.

When the fitting and hose are properly matched and assembled, field attachable fittings can meet applicable SAE requirements. The key point is important: SAE performance depends on both the fitting construction and the hydraulic hose material, so the fitting cannot be judged by shape alone.

Metal seal fittings

Metal seal fittings use a metal sealing surface, often with a tapered thread and machined face. The seal depends on the condition and fit of the metal surfaces, so damaged seats or mismatched parts can create leakage. Some metal-seal connections may require welding or soldering to the tube side, depending on the fitting design.

Soft seal fittings

Soft seal fittings use an elastomeric seal to prevent leakage. O-ring face seal fittings are one example. Because the seal is made by an elastomer rather than only metal contact, this style can handle vibration well when the seal material and connection design match the hydraulic fluid and service condition.

Tapered thread fittings

Tapered thread fittings seal as the male and female threads deform together. This style can work where the port is designed for it, but it has more leak risk if the threads, sealant practice, or installation are wrong.

Installation considerations

NPT thread installation should be treated carefully because it is usually better suited to a connection that will stay in place. If the hose needs to be removed or replaced regularly, a quick coupler or suitable JIC-style connection may be a better choice for repeated assembly and disassembly.

A hydraulic leak can create downtime, cleanup, safety risk, and equipment damage. Before installation, confirm the fitting category, sealing style, hose construction, and whether the connection is expected to stay permanent or be serviced regularly.
